If an item was removed from the registry can it be replaced by using system restore? This is a question for a friend that has an unknown issue (something with the avi shell) and they would like to replace it.

Yes, System Restore does back up the registry.

In fact it doesn't do very much more than that. It just backs up a handfull of critical system files.
