I have a problem with the windows XP registry. I was experiencing difficulties getting rid of a virus/worm that I believed to be Welchia because it was running the svchost.exe file and taking up more than 60 percent of my CPU. so despite the fact that i knew which file it was and where it was, I couldn't get rid of it, it was also preventing me from running any kind of virus scanning program. So after repeatedly taking the svchost.exe file out of the startup sequence using msconfig, I finnally went in and deleted it from the registry, anywhere i found svchost.exe..... well apparently that file happens to be a critical windows operating file, and now I'm having all sorts of problems becuase windows needed those particular registry keys and files..... is there any way to fix this without reinstalling windows?.... any way at all?

thanks in advance

- TR

Well - if you didn't backup the Registry before Deleting those Files - how about trying System Restore back to the day before you went into the Registry

You can also go to start> run and type in sfc /scannow. With your recovery disk in the drive, this will replace and repair any windows system files. - Note there is a space between c and /.

ok, asside from the fact that I know I'm stupid for not backing up the registry, System Restore was turned off, and not having this svchost file and its services makes it to where i can't turn it back on, in addition, system file checker put the file back in its place, but the registry entries are still missing. At least by putting the svchost.exe file back I am now able to use the task bar! will Registry First Aid do anything for this?

You will probably have to do a reinstall. Boot from the XP CD abd go past the repair console to the installation menu. Select REPAIR EXISTING INSTALLATION and let it reinstall/repair.You will have to reinstall all the windows updates. Rgds.
