i have an Hp Computer running windows xp. I downloaded and advance copy Of "Registry First Aid" and afetr scanning my registry it found(gasp!)650 invalid paths, 25 invalid shared Dlls,16 obsolete startup items, etc. It only fixes the first 14 and you have to purchase the registered copy to fix the rest. Is this a scam or is my computers registry really that screwed up?What is the lowdown on them?
Thanks in advance

It could be that loaded up. It depends on how old it is and how much installing of new applications you've done. I personally don't think people should mess with the registry if you don't know what you're doing. You could end up with a paperweight. If you're not having problems with your machine, don't worry about it.

This is what I use and it is free and very safe to work with. I have yet to have to restore anything that was removed from the use of it. While I agree with grasshopper about not fixing it if it is not broke, I also believe in keeping things in the best performance.

I use SystemSuite's (V-COM) registry cleaner (part of a suite of programs. Got it at little or no cost after rebates). It marks it's findings in Green, Yellow, and Red. I delete all the Green ones, some yellow and red ones after seeing what they are. Never a problem with this one.

Also use a free one called "Regseeker".

Regseeker is very good but do not delete anything not written in green type. I did once and my computer crashed but after trying again and only deleting the items marked in green, everything is fine.

Another good free one is "EasyCleaner" by ToniArts. I can delete everything it finds and not have any problems. This free suite includes many other useful cleanup tools.

If you need links to either of the free ones, let us know and I will provide them.

I have been using registry first aid for a couple years. I think it is worth the money. It doesn't surprise me it found all those entries. My first time was 500+.
