I am looking for a regisrty cleaner.I am beginning to appreciate the importance of keeping the registry fit and trim like the rest of my software for a smoother and faster performing system. I am requesting this also because my computer is sluggish and I know that my registry needs a "tune-up".
If I have to pay for a good product I don't mind, as long as it is user friendly, a proven product that has many features and won't create more problems when it's done it's job. Thanks in advance
GerryI have winxp Pro installed and after a few headaches with software and hardware compatability issues and after upgrading my BIOS my computer was finally working to my satisfaction. I decided to move a

Freeware regcleaner4.3, find it here: http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm
A bit of advice, don't worry too much about registry bloat. The best use of a registry cleaner is to remove the reminants that won't allow reinstallation or give you screens that are hunting for a program that has already been removed. The program I linked to is perfectly safe to use and is seamless. There are other more aggressive ones that can be danerous in the wrong hands. The author that wrote the one I linked did a series of cleaners that culminated with a commercial product. I have never used the commercial product. The last freeware version of the product is called jvpowertools16 version195. This is hard to find now because the commercial site saw to that. You can try.

Try RegscrubXP, Google is your friend
Hope this helps
The world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

I use all these cleaners for XP , each one specialises in a different area .
Do not be supprised if hundreds of files are found .
Files are either removed to the programs backup or the Recycle Bin ( make sure the Recycle Bin is empty , before using the cleaners , that way you know the files you have removed )
All ( except DustBuster ), allow you to restore them back into the system , either by right clicking on the reg file in the programs folder ( example Regclean & OleClean > Windows Explorer > Unzipped , click on either RegClean or OleClean ) & clicking on Merge .
jv16 PowerTools & RegSeeker both store in Backup on their main page .
Opening Backup allows you to either Restore or Delete .EasyCleaner removes to the Recycle Bin & by opening the Recycle Bin , right clicking on the files & clicking Restore .
CCleaner , the advantage of this cleaner is , when Issues is clicked & the boxes ticked , it will tell you before you fix ( doing one file at a time ) why the file is there .
Configure the Windows , Applications & Issues panels to suit .RegScrub
Click on Restore , click the backup to be restored , click on Restore Selected backups .DustBuster
Very quick , if you want to know what it cleaned , takes about 1 min to clean ( depends on the speed of your comp ) you have about 4 seconds to read the message displayed , when it is finished .Find Junk Files
I use mainly for > Find Dead Links .Backups
Once you are sure they are not needed again ( about one week ) they can be deleted .=============================

Registry Cleaner for Windows XP/2000 Systems (under development is a version that will run in

I have made it very easy for you to backup the registry prior to using RegScrubXP. This backup process uses Microsoft's reg.exe program. Follow these directions:
Go into the folder where RegScrubXP was installed.
Double-click on these two programs: HKLM.cmd and HKCU.cmd
You should see two files created: HKLM.reg and HKCU.reg
Copy these two files to a safe place.
If you ever need to fully restore your registry back to normal, double-click on HKLM.reg and HKCU.reg to fully restore your registry as it was before you used RegScrubXP.==================================

Wow, nice find with RegCleaner 4.3!!! I've been looking everywhere for that over the last few days.
Many thanks! Enjoy your weekend all.~Tommyo

Hi Gerry, hi All,
If money insn't a problen then invest in another 256MB of RAM. That will knock the slug out of sluggish. Throw in a defrag just for the fun of ish.
Regards,
Bryan

Good morning everyone!
Johnw, have you noticed that RegCleaner 4.3 to be a little stubborn to run? I click the desktop icon, and the program is quite the bugger to open. And if I am lucky to get it to open, it sometimes will not run; it has a tendency to hang there...Just wondering if you encountered this also.
I guess it has merged into a JV Power program now, but I always liked the original regCleaner 4.3; it always worked very well for me.Hope you're still following this thread; I'd like to know if yours is running o.k. for you. Thanks, my friend... enjoy your weekend!
~Tommyo

G'day ~Tommyo , no trouble at all , probably uninstalling regCleaner 4.3 & JV Power , then reinstalling jv16 PowerTools 1.3.0.195 & RegCleaner 4.3.0.780 will fix .
They don't merge & they both installed seperately in Program Files .

Hello Johnw..Is the JV one very similar to the RegCleaner? I couldn't seem to find a screenshot, nor was I able to see if it has the same appearance/functions of our favorite RegCleaner.
Maybe that was my problem, as I only installed RegCleaner; not the JV one... I always liked that RegCleaner very much so I was hoping to stick with that one only. But maybe now they both must be installed????
Thanks very much Johnw for getting back to me on that... I will do some investigation work later on today and see if I can find the solution. Hope I can still just stay with RegCleaner!! It always worked like a champ for me!
Take care John; I'll check into this post again later on today. Thanks!!!

jvpowertools is more powerful and can cause problems if used incorrectly, but can also be used to solve problems that Regcleaner can't solve. If Regcleaner solves the problem then don't bother with jvpowertools.

Hi OtheHill... Yes, I do prefer my favorite RegCleaner 4.3; but for some reason the download that I got yesterday does not work too well. The desktop icon must be repeatedly clicked to get the program open, and then once it is open, something is not quite right with the appearance... it does not list my programs the way it did on my old pc.
I don't know if I obtained a bad download or not.... RegCleaner is very difficult to find, as apparently it has merged with that JV program... I'd sure be happy to just run RegCleaner 4.3; but it doen't run correctly here for me...I do have RegCleaner 4.3 on my old Dell pc, but it would not burn properly when I tried to copy it to install in my new Dell.
I'll do some more research this afternoon; see if I can find another download of it just in case I obtained a bad d/l.
Thanks much for the help!!!!~Tommyo

Look up above at response #4. Regcleaner 4.3 is listed there at a dofferent site. I usually use jvpowertools16.

Yup, I already tried that other one...same result. I can't figure it out. It puts the desktop icon there, but no matter how many times you click it, it will not open.
I did get it to open via right-click; run-as. But when it finally opens, it does not appear correctly; also hangs. I had to end process through task mgr and delete the entire program. It must be bad download sites, or else it is now integrated to function with JVpowertools now.
I'll check out that JV one and see how that goes. If not, I'll rely on the ole' standby C.Cleaner.Many thanks, OtheHill! Have a nice weekend!

Click on Johnw & you will get my email link , email me & I can send you screenshots & whatever programs you want .

Use it with great care.

Good morning Johnw... 9:20 am here in Massachusetts. Thanks for that info, Johnw.
All of the RegCleaner downloads that I tried (3 of them now) do not work. The desktop icon will not open RegCleaner, and then if it does decide to open, it opens with a "agree / disagree to rules...." type screen; then just hang there. They do not work at all, so I gave up on it entirely. I do have a fully functioning one on my old pc, however I don't know if I could either burn it, or somehow transfer it over onto my new pc. Personally, I do not think it is possible, but I'll try.If no luck with that, then I'll just use the CrapCleaner that I have installed here. That also scans the registry for obsolete entries.
Too bad that the RegCleaner merged with JVPowertools; I really liked that original RegCleaner 4.3 the way it was.
Thanks Johnw for the help; also thanks Derek for the advice on RegSeeker. It probably goes with any kind of registry cleaner.... use with caution and know for certain what you are deleting.....
Take care everyone, and thanks much!
~Tommyo

Regcleaner4.3 didn't merge with jvpowertools. The author simply developed later versions, and extension of his previous work. The program went commercial after build 195. I had been using build 196 for some time when it quit working at the beginning of the year. I think that must have been the beginning of 2004. This is when Mace took over. The jvpowertools was already a mature program by then. I have had issues with jvpowertools working with some versions of WinXP. For that reason I started recommending Regcleaner.

Oh, thanks OtheHill.. I hear ya' now and understand.
I don't suppose there would be any way to transfer the RegCleaner 4.3 that is on my old Dell over to this new Dell, would there?I kind of doubt it, as I already tried to burn it to CD but it did not work too well. I don't believe it burned the entire program for some reason as it didn't want to open on the new Dell.
This new pc came with one of those memory key USB things; like a portable file transfer device of some type. I haven't even experimented with it yet, so at this typing I'm a tad unfamiliar with it.
Always something new to learn with pc's, LOL!Take care; enjoy your Sunday!

You may have some other issues with your system that is causing Regcleaner to behave this way.

Johnw
Re you #18. I've just rechecked and yes the IE entry was green.
This was certainly also the case with the 330 file extensions I mentioned and with the key memoriser program entries that were removed. I have a stack of other exculsions set into that program.
Having said all that, mostly there is no outward sign of a problem (although I fail to see why file extensions in use should be queried).
The big problem with registry cleaners is that often you don't notice that they have goofed it. At some later date you just find that something fails to work or is missing. You can see the game I had getting that IE entry right again.
When reviving anything that fails I usually run the registry cleaners afterwards just to see if they were the culprit. That's how I found out about these particular problems.
It's a risk you take with all registry cleaners but the more thorough they are the more risk you take. I regard RegSeeker as very thorough.
The safest is Regcleaner4.3 (or the first sheet of jv16). You remove redundant software by name, so it's in your hands.
I'm not saying you shouldn't touch other registry cleaners but they are best in the hands of folk who have a fair idea what they are doing. So often you get a registry entry showing a path like this:
c:\program files\wonder program\wonder.exe /g
The registry cleaner cannot (obviously) find a file "wonder.exe /g" because the /g is a switch. It will remove the entry if you let it. There are many similar examples.

Hi OtheHill...there could very well be something that I'm not aware of; it certainly has me scratchin' my head here, LOL! I tried three different download locations now, and none of them would work.
I'll keep toying around; should I have any luck or anything else that might be helpful, I'll post it here. Thanks very much OtheHill.
Thanks Derek for that information. That's one reason I wanted RegCleaner 4.3 so much; it always worked great and never caused me any difficulties. How I wished one of those three downloads would have worked, dammit!
Oh well; thanks all very much...I'll keep you posted..
~Tommyo

Many thanks, Derek... I will p.m. you now...
Sorry for the delay; I just saw the post now.....

OtheHill , you jogged my memory , I installed the version after 4.3.0.780 on my old comp & it had a time thing written in ( 12 months I think ) & a nag screen poped up , asking to buy .
I uninstalled & installed an older version , but still got the nag screen & was never able find how to remove it .
