even after i remove cd from cdrom drive the icon of that particular cd remains and it is not chainging back to the default icon....any help

Do you have two optical (CD or DVD) drives?
If you do, try a CD in the other optical drive to see if it does the same thing.
If it doesn't, there is a tiny switch in drives you insert disks into that signals the operating system whether or not there is a disk in the drive and that is probably either broken or stuck in it's retracted (depressed) position.
E.g. I have seen this problem several times with floppy drives. If you read a disk, remove it, insert a different disk, read it, you see the same contents in My Computer or Windows Explorer as on the first disk - Windows doesn't know you have changed the disk.
Only rebooting cures the situation, until another disk is inserted. If the other drive does the same thing, you have a software problem I haven't seen before.

disable autoplay and see if it makes a difference, then re-enable autoplay.
It is safest to disable CD autoplay in XP using either local group policy or, for an enterprise, an Active Directory group policy. The local group policy editor method:
Click Start
Click Run
Enter GPEDIT.MSC Group Policy mmc will popup. On left panel:
Double-click Computer Configuration to open submenu
Double-click Administrative Templates to open submenu
Double-click System to open submenu
Double-click Turn autoplay off option which will be near the bottom of the list in the right panel. The default is the Not configured . Set it to Enabled.
