refresh rate

CPU/Ram: 2.8 athlon

I am runnung win xp have a radeon 9600xt video card on a 17 inch monitor
2.8 athlon
1 gig ddr memory
screen resolution is set at 1024x768 im in region 2 pal(if it matters)
what refresh rate should i be on
options are as follows
60 hertz
70 hertz
72 hertz
75 hertz
80 hertz

what should my rate be i think my default is 60 hertz but not sure as my son was playing with the settings
is higher the better
can i try them without any harm to my computer
any info would help

tick the box that says 'hide wot y monitor cannot display'

the highest refresh rate is the best, it means yr monitor wont flicker as much
