I'm still having a problems with the refresh rate in windows xp pro. Here's the story:

Used onboard via S3G graphics to start with,
Then bought a nVidia Geforce FX 5200 card and put that in and installed drivers (without removing the the other drivers first - tut tut!)
Had loads of problems - blue screens, black screens and slow screens.
Removed nVidia drivers and card and refreshed the old drivers.
Now using the on board graphics again the screen seems to loose the ability to refresh after a while. This causes slow refreshing of windows up until the point where it just freezes the screen, the mouse, everything. I then have to hit the reset switch.

Any suggestions as to what it might be...or a fix?

Much appreciated for any info.

Thanks!

Just a guess, but maybe you should have disabled
the onboard graphics in BIOS, when installing the new card.

Sounds like a possible heat problem, how are you system temps? And is CPU fan spinning?

There should have been one included with the utilities for your motherboard. If not, have a look on the manufacturer's website.

What model of board is it?

hmm, your temps look ok there. How long does it usually take for the PC to freeze, does it happen quicker if you're playing a game, as opposed to just using Windows?

dannyboy,
The freezes seem to happen at random times, although it's not happened in the last couple of days. I was doing something in Flash the last time it froze.

josh,
I had a look at the event veiwer\system.
The following keeps cropping up here and there, but apart from that, all looks fine.

The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

p.s. Sorry for the delay in responding!

Wouldn't you just know it.....

My screen just went off - black.
I do keep getting error reports that say explorer.exe has errors and the event viewer points out that it cannot find the windrvNT file. Thats because i renamed it to solve a previous problem of it keep crashing my system whilst trying to use ntbackup.

I tried to get my screen working again but no joy. It was left for about 30 mins and when i came back it was blank. I have a screen saver set and the monitor neither used this or the standby mode - it just went off! The monitor is still on..it's just blank.

Sorry to be a pain...advice is much appreciated :-)

I haven't had the problem for a good while now roleli....i went into device manager and view>show hidden devices so the non-plug and play drivers where shown and disabled the problem system drivers (which i found to be windrvNT and PfModNT). This i think sorted the crashing of progs. They were however shown to have a yellow icon next to them, cause i removed the actual files that were causing the problem previousley, and because they were still active in the device manager, where causing all sorts of probs.

The other thing i did was to go to Power Options in Control Panel and instruct the comp never to turn of the monitor (as i think this particular monitor has a problem with coming back on without certain instructions...i may be wrong!) and i left the pc on all day today and left it. I came back and it was fine!

Try it...good luck!
