I'm upgrading my os to xp pro. Will my msn settings be affected? I dont want to loose my favorites. I'm an msn premium user, and have the installation disk. If theres an easy way to export my fav's I would rather just do it and be safe.
Thanks

Hi SheCanBuild;
I don't use XP but upgrading to XP Pro should not affect your favorites as far as I know.

But backing up favorites (bookmarks) as well as everything else on your computer is always a good idea. Then burn your backups to a disk for safe keeping. Then backup your backup.

Open a Window.
Click File.
Click Import and Export to open the wizard.
Click Next.
Highlight Export Favorites.
Click Next.
Highlight Favorites.
Click Next.
Choose where to save it.
Click Next.
Click Finish.
Click OK.

Burn the file to a disk;
Good luck.

Randy,
I just tried that but I can't access the msn browser. Just explorer is there. There's not even an import export option on my msn menu (not one I can see anyway) TY though Cause I did save the explorer fav's. (they were exported to my msn browser a year ago already...if I loose the msn stuff atleast I'll have those)
Thanks,
She

Hi again SheCanBuild;

I forgot to mention one other thing.
Unless you know how to configure XP manually I would suggest installing the SP2 update.
Actually I suggest it anyway. There is still more you can do however. A firewall is one thing. SP2 will turn on XP's firewall which is better than no firewall.

Keep it safe and secure;

Yeah I have that disk too and will install it. I was going to install SP2 on my XP Home OS, but kept on chickening out, since I don't have any xp disks (bought it from walmart and it dosnt come with and disks just system restore) I've been affraid of crashes and problems ever since we got it, so finally decided to get the xp pro, that way we'll have a disk too.

I found that on my msn i can manually add favorites but that's going to take flippen years. Isn't that content stored online? I know that with yahoo bookmarks I can access them anywhere by signing in to my yahoo.

Sigh....

Hi again;

Try this.
Minimize the MSN browser.
Double click the blue E on your desktop or
click on the blue E in your quick launch.
It is just to the right of your Start.

Then look for File at the top left of your screen in the toolbars. Click it.

Look for Import and Export.

SheCanBuild, dunno if this'll work, should. What happens if you simply highlite all your favs (Ctrl+A) and save the result to disk rather than HDD. Seems like that oughta be the same as an export?

Hi again;

I feel your pain. Adding bookmarks one at a time can take forever. I have about 900.
They are all within folders within folders etc. or I would never find anything.

Your Windows Favorites are not stored online like they are with Yahoo. Yes I use Yahoo too. I also store them there for anywhere access.

You need the export/import feature for yours:

I'm not sure which MSN Explorer version you are using, but i use MSN 9.0 and my favorites are stored online. I've reformatted twice now, and each time i install the MSN software from CD, my favorites list and other settings have always re-appeared intact. It takes a while for all your settings, etc. to be re-downloaded from MSN, so don't freak out if they don't appear immediately. Again, i don't know which version you are using, but this is how it works on my machine.

Thanks for the help ya'll. I called quest and asked them (Before reading your post Jim) and I'll just need to reinstall msn and log in to my account and they'll still be there. So I guess I'm finally ready to do this

Hi Ed;

I think if you navigate to favorites in Explore you can copy and save the Shell favorites folder. But you might also have to delete the original folder then replace it.

I'm not going to experiment with it tonight.
It might be a registry item. I think it is. i'll leave that for the experts here. I'm a novice;

Hi again everyone:

As i stated all along I do not have your operating system nor do I use any of the later versions of MSN sign in access. I still use MSN Signin version 5.6. You can't even get that anymore.

But my stance on backup still stands.
Backup everything to disk.
Do not depend on online backup.
And backup your backup.

I really suggest making a copy of your favorites using the export function.
You can also take the disk with you and use it where ever you go.

There is a difference between a complete format and reloading windows over the top.
As well as a simple upgrade.

Backup everything. Do it today or be sorry tomorrow;

RandyL is absolutely correct! Backing up the backup is not being too careful. When I reformatted and installed XP Pro, I did a copy to floppy, (I thought) and had all my 900+ Favorites saved. I thought. When I went to copy them back into XP there was nothing there! And I used the same floppy that I had used a number of times before, so I didn't even have an old backup! So, whatever you put it on, do a DIR or whatever to see if they are really there.

Good luck. :)
