Comment:
im trying to reformat my family's computer, and i have created a win98 boot disk that functions (can read cdrom and such) but whenever i try to run a command from the disk (format, fdisk, anything ive tried) it says 'Incorrect MS-DOS version'. i tried to reformat using the windows xp cd(deleting the partition) but it says it cant delete it because the partition has system files or somthing like that. i know you have probably answered this somewhere, but i didnt see anything that related to this kind of problem in the 3 or 4 reformatting posts i saw.

Go back to the 98 box that you made the boot disk from and copy fdisk and format from there to the floppy diskette.
Wrong ms version means the Dos version you are booting is not the same as the one associated with the files fdisk and format. Get the correct versions and you will be fine.
Or just download delpart.exe from the web to remove the drives partition and recreate with install.
