Some people think 'format' is the same as 'restore'. I suspect that your friend might have meant 'restore. Some OEM systems can do a restore without a CD. They can restore their system to the way it came from the factory by using a certain key combination during a boot. It does the restore from an image on the hard drive. Have him/her check the PC mnufacturer's web site for information.
