Hi, all.
In my C:\Windows folder there are 51 folders highlighted in blue. They all have similar names to this one: $NTUninstallKB810217$ Are these files still likely to be needed?
Also in my C:\ folder I have the following files: ImgCache.pvd, ImgCache.pvi, UNWISE, ffastun0, ffastun, Install, Virtpart and twenty empty VDMxx.tmp files. Can any of these be deleted?
There is also a folder named: 34bae90411ecde3a7bc7b1c691 which contains a folder named: sp2 (525kb) This folder contains: update, spmsg.dll and spuninst. I haven't knowingly downloaded any Sp2 files, so what is this?

DO NOT DELETE THE $UNINSTALL$ FILES!!!!
They are a record of the programs that have been installed on your computer. Windows uses these files to uninstall if and when you wish. If you delete them then windows will not be able to uninstall.

Ted:The $NTUninstall files are for removing Microsoft updates and hotfixes. If you have no intention of removing the updates, you can delete them.
I'd leave the ImgCache.pvd, ImgCache.pvi, UNWISE, ffastun0, ffastun, Install, Virtpart files alone. (If memory serves, UNWISE is a program uninstaller--you might need it in the future.)
The VDMxx.tmp files--actually, temp files of any kind--can be deleted.
Lastly, spmsg.dll and spuninst are referenced HERE in Microsoft documentation. It's a long read, so leave the files until you're sure. 8-)
No matter what you decide to remove, always make a System Restore point first. And a registry backup for good measure.

Yep, it's like that. If you definitely don't have any intention to uninstall those updates, then you can delete them. Just remember that MAYBE there'll be some times where removing an update can solve some problems too.
But it certainly won't harm if you pack them in a RAR or ZIP, and let them there around for some more time. Any SP upgrade is always a good reason to removing them, 'cause generally a SP should include all those single updates.
About those files in root, the ffast* ones are from Office Fast Find or Fast <something>. :) If you disabled that function in Control Panel, then you can delete those two files also. FOR ME, this option is quite useless, it just depends on your Office use.

Hi there, door, Solarian and Charlie Brown.
Thank you for your replies.I created a new folder on another partition and moved all the $Uninstall$ files to it. They will be available if ever I need them.
