i search the forum and tried several suggestions so i decided to post to see if anyone can help. within the last few days, i have some, not all, gif images that won't display in internet explorer or outlook express when viewing web pages. i have a placeholder with a red x. the only thing in common among the gifs that don't show is they show "not available" under their properties for their type and size. they show as .gif extensions and are gif images. the site i was checking this on is cnet.com. the gifs that show, including on that page, have gif image as their type and show a size. i have tried several fixes posted and reinstalled ie6 but nothing has helped.
i would greatly appreciate any other suggestions.

If you see some but not all, are you positive it's not the site you're looking at?
When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

The IE red-x are better referred to as IE Red-X Syndrome. The following link should help.
How to Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
i_XpUser

XpUser,
I have tried dumping my temp int files but not to the extreme list on that link. I will try that and post back. Thanks.

XpUser,
dumped all temp internet files including offline content. tried deleting the entire temp internet folder as per instructions and letting it rebuild but that didn't help. still same problem on cnet, zdnet and such. also deleted cookies for those sites. it is only some of the gifs and all that won't show still have that "not available" under type size and dates.
any other things i should try? thanks.

If you are using spybot or spywareblaster they are killing the gif's. That's what they are supposed to do. They are spyware.
please post back with the fix that worked so we may help others. Thanks.

XpUser, nope, no aol installed on this pc.
per, i do have spybot and have for years but don't use any of the immunize features. now i did install spyware blaster a week or so ago. if that is it, is there a way to get around it without uninstalling and how come it only suppresses some of the gifs and not all?

per, is disabled all protection in spywareblaster, cleaned all temp internet files including offline content and that didn't help the problem. still red x on some gif images.

The ones spywareblaster are suppressing are the ones in the file. You can open it and del the ones you want to see but I don't recommend it.
please post back with the fix that worked so we may help others. Thanks.

per, what file are you referring to.
i uninstalled spywareblaster, deleted the spywareblaser folder, rebooted and still have the same problem. only some gif not displaying and those show type, size, and date "not available"
be awhile before i can post back but i will greatly appreciate any further suggestions by anyone. thanks. i will check back asap.

Search for a file named "host" delete it and it will fix itself. It is a file that contains all the " no go to sites" It is in windows-system32-drivers-etc. folder.
please post back with the fix that worked so we may help others. Thanks.

i will be glad to try that. do you think spywareblaster modified it to the point where the site comes up but some of the gifs don't? i just don't understand that.
i will give it a try and post back. it will be a while, but thanks again.

Thanks for that, I know it's not really correct, but I do not think the censors at this website will allow the word bas_tard.
Iligitimi non carborundum est

I sincerely appreciate everyone's help especially you, per. The problem was fixed when I opened my hosts file and deleted all the sites that I assume SpywareBlaster added. Once I closed the file and saved it, got on the net and all gifs now show.
Thanks again

XpUser,
if you are still monitoring this post, i have one more question. after i deleted my temp int folder from my user account as instructed by the link you posted, windows rebuilt the temp int folder but it doesn't have the ie5 content folder with the index.dat file or the other strange name folders inside. all files are listed directly under my user temp. int. folder.
how can i make this back to normal???

I too am having this problem. I was using Spybot and did everything suggested here. Uninstalled the program and deleted the folder and rebooted. Still seeing these fabulous red x's. However, I can't find any "host" files. I don't see it in my Windows/systems/.. any suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Holley,
Do a search for it and be sure it is also searching for hidden files as this file is hidden. You can open it with notepad but be careful and you may want to back it up first. You didn't state which operating system you are using and it's location is different for 98 and XP. I never had a problem with Spybot but who knows. It would be worth checking.
