some people posted here about a problem in winxp; basically, when one wants to empty the recycle bin, it asks, "Do you want to delete windows (or WinNT etc.)?" The recycle bin is always empty. I also go this problem, but I think I found out why, so I post it here, in case somebody else searches for a solution. I think this problem occurs on a dual boot system with the recycle bin switched on and with deleted files on it on the first OS. Personally I am using Norton Utilities undelete (part of norton utilities 2002) on both win98 and winxp pro. recently I installed an ntfs driver on win98 to read my winxp partition from within win98. norton used to crash the system, so that I had to disable the norton undelete. sitting there without an undelete protection, I decided to enable the native recycle bin of win98. deleted some files, they were put into the recycle bin, then restarted the pc, went to windows xp, and saw that the option "empty recycle bin" was enabled. before it was always disabled, since, as I said, I am using norton utilities undelete on winxp. clicked on "empty the bin", and was asked whether to delete windows. went back to win98, switched off the recycle bin, restarted winxp - the "empty bin" option was greyed out again. restarted win98, switched on the recycle bin, restarted winxp - still greyed out. "why is it still greyed out?" I am asking myself. obviously, because the recycle bin on win98 was empty, since I only switched it on, but didn't delete any files yet. so I went back to win98, deleted some unnecessary files, restarted winxp - the option to empty the bin appeared again. clicked on it, but this time it didn't ask to delete windows, but only asked me whether I want to delete the 5 elements (the 5 files I deleted in win98). So it seems, windowsxp gets confused. it believes that the win98 recycle bin is its own recycle bin. but it is not, of course, so winxp is so confused that sometimes it wants to delete the files which are really in the bin, and sometimes it wants to delete windows. the best solution would be to use norton utilities 2002 undelete on both systems - works perfectly and never had any problems with it. it just doesn't work on my system, since there is a conflict with the ntfs driver, but I will try to install a different driver (ntfs 98 instead of ntfs dos basic 3) and try whether norton undelete works again on win98. but if you don't need an ntfs driver, simply install norton undelete on all windows system and switch off the native windows recycle bin
