I got the system32/config/system message. I tried to boot to the recovery console after putting in the setup CD. The instructions to get to the recovery console on some of the responses here said to press "r" for repair. but when I boot with the setup CD it says press "F3" (It was F something. don't really remember) to enter recovery console. when I press F? it says to insert floppy and press enter whenever I'm ready. I'm confused. I should be able to get to the recovery console even if it's not previous installed. What do I need to do to get to the recovery console??

It sounds like you may have a recovery CD instead of an XP CD, in which case you may need the 6 boot disks from MS.

Try doing a 'repair' install. Do not select F6, let it go till you get to the promp to install Windows (wish I could remember exactly how to get there). Select 'Install', then at the next window select 'Repair install'. WindowsXP will be refreshed, but you will retain all your apps and configs.

your system restore should have recent system backup. It's just a matter of being able to navigate to the folder.
you might be able to restore the original system registry files then get into windows and copy a more recent system registry file where you can access it easier. or if you can get into windows run system restore to the last good check point
