I would like to know how Recovery Console can help me, as opposed to say just choosing to repair the installation. Also, I understand there is a way to boot into the recovery console without booting from the Win XP CD. How do you do that? But mostly I was hoping for some insight on it's value in recovering a corrupt system, as opposed to a repair. Thank you.

The Recovery Console is used when you already pretty much know what the problem is. It can be used to manually restore missing files from the installation CD and that sort of thing. It takes a user who is fairly knowledgeable and familiar with using Dos commands.

And Hiho, before you jump in here. I didn't say you would be using Dos, I said that it would help if you are familiar with using Dos commands.

ham30: My link covered the use of NT COMMAND PROMPT, and now I realise from the previous post that you are aware of the subtleties, I would not critisize, but prefer the word DOS was not bandied about in NT Forums.
