Recovery Console Help

Specs: Windows XP Media Center 2004
My computer has recently gotten the blue screen death (specifically error 24), which pertains to a hard drive related malfuction. I am trying to go to recovery console in order to run chdsk, and if that doesn't work, then I'll know my hard drive is fried or I'll have to format and reinstall xp again(If hard drive still works but chdsk fails to do anything). Problem is I don't have the original disk, but I do have a copy of xp home edition. When I boot to disk it takes me to the blue screen and loads some files but instead of giving me 3 options it automatically starts windows, which in turn leads to the blue screen of death. So I can't even start recovery console. Any ideas? I would rather not have to format and lose my data but at this point I am so frustrated I just want to start over. (Also I have already tried all the safe modes and etc.. and they don't work)

There is the option of downloading the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics.

Yea, use the drive fitness utility for who ever made your drive. Install to disk and boot to it. If that comes back OK then possibly we can be of further assistance.
