recovered my data, but...

Specs: windows xp, 3gb Ram
good day, i hope this is the right forum for this problem. i week ago while trying to downgrade from vista to xp, i made a mistake and partioned part of my external hard drive that had over 400gb of data on it. my computer no longer could see the drive and i took it to a guy who does data recovery.

well thankfully he was able to recover the majority of my data! unfortunately there's thousands of folders with crazy names like recoup dir 1, recoup dir 800, etc......i had over 400gb of videos and personal music that i have done with my groups and all the songs are called numbers. for example, a song called "i love you" is now called something like 3847512918743. There's no way i can go through all the folders and put all these things in there right locations. i'm happy to have everything back, but this is crazy. i put several cd's of mine on my computer and all the songs are now called numbers and there all mixed up by thousands of different folders, same with videos, and pictures.

I know this is a long shot, but is there any programs that can restore these files to their original names? i know this is an even longer shot...but is there any programs that but all these albums and videos back in their original folders? i haven't even looked for my programs yet. This recovery has tons of text files..............any help or advice? thanks very much

Here are some pretty good file recvery programs:

PC Inspector (freeware)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...

Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs

IMO the best, but not free
GetDataBack
http://www.runtime.org/

thanks my friend, but that's not the problem. the data was recovered, but all the files have different names and instead of being separated in maybe 100 different folders they are know separated in over 1,000 different folders.

My hope is that the person who restored your files did a poor job with a poor file recovery program.

Give the ones I suggested a try.

I have had fairly good results with the first two and excellent results with GetDataBack.

You're welcome Amanda. But if GetDataBack doesn't do the job, it wouldn't hurt to try some others. All File Recovery programs do not work exactly alike, so one might fail at a certain job and another one might do better.

thanks alot aegis1, i didn't have much confidence and didn't know what i was gonna do. your words gave me some hope. getdataback ran all night and didn't do very good, it did similar to the repairman's program. several folders with numeric names, several files with numeric names that weren't given to them. several files appeared missing also.

so i said, i'd try 1 more it's called EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard, Wow!!! it got everything back!!!! same folder, same name!!! very happy. thanks alot my friend. now i'm gonna backup import files between different hard drives. thanks

You are very welcome Amanda, and good work!!!

Thanks very much for the feedback on EASEUS! I'll add that to my list of recovery programs to recommend.

I am a person who is obsessed with backing up. I have been burned too many times, even when I had a backup. I now keep 'two' backups of everything, and they are on separate drives, and I even have some third backups on DVDs. :-)
