Matt,

For starters, if you have not yet already, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and download Hotfix Q313484.

Hi Matt,

Let's figure this one out:

Do you have any Creative components like Sound Blaster?

If so, did you install SBLive?

Did you install the WinXP patch for this?

How about PlayCenter2?

Did you install the WinXP patch for this?

START -> RUN -> "MSCONFIG"

Go to the "Startup" Tab

############################################
LEGEND
! Needed - re-enable if no errors
~ Optional - re-enable if no errors
* Don't need/crashes XP - leave unchecked
============================================
uncheck (if present):
AHQTB AudioHQ TSR !
CTNMRUN PlayCenter TSR(detects devices)~
CTAutoEA Env Audio TSR(jacks up XP)*
NewsUpd Creative News (spyware)*

############################################

Let's start with those first. If the error disappears, reselect AHQTB (and maybe CTNMRUN) and see what happens.

Don't uninstall anything (leave the spyware disabled though), Creative is working on patches for the other stuff.

>Mixer.exe /startup (wtf is this?)
Do you have an Asus mo'board?
This EXE may be your problem; regardless, it is a good candidate for deletion later,
uncheck it.

>qttast.exe
QtTask.exe is a task tray TSR to allow one-click access to QuickTime 5.0 + (that's all it does)
Not required, uncheck it.

>AHQTB
Creative Audio HQ, you need it to control your audio software and store the audio settings.
Re-enable if no errors

>RUNDLL32.EXE
RUNDLL32.EXE is part of the system.
Leave it alone.

>MPXPTray
Hold off on this one and we can figure out what it is later...

Ken

I also had this before. I just deleted the .dmp files in the Minidump directory under Windows and the WER2.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml. I had this after I installed a new program.

After the deletion, it went on well.

Matt,

Check the box next to "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts"

Every time you change anything in the MSCONFIG utility, you will have to re-check this box.

You can re-enable anything we talked about as long as there are no errors - just remember that each TSR running in the background is a performance hit against the OS...

Happy Holidays,

Ken

I dunno Matt,

Take screen shots of your MSCONFIG view and email them to me.

Capture the default view, then shift over to the right, expand the Command view and capture, then shift right again, expand Location view and capture that as well.

Send them to me as JPEGS and I will take a look.

I recently incured this problem. I have just bought an ASUS A7A266 mobo... Has C-Mixer inbuilt sound. The first time it happened to me after 2 months of owning nthe baord and dowloading various software ect..
I came across a driver update in windows updates (Im running Windows XP Pro).
The update was for the C-Mixer program that comes with the ASUS software...
Anyway, seems to have fixed the problem.
Cheers

About a month ago I started seeing the infamous "Recovered From Serious Error at startup" message with Windows XP Pro. It gradually showed up more and more frequently until one day I couldn't start my computer at all; it'd go through the standard startup procedures but once it started loading Windows XP I'd get a blue screen telling me to try and restart in safe mode. This did nothing for me and eventually I had no choice but to reformat and install XP again.
Now, after a month, the "Serious Error" message has returned. It makes it through the startup process but when I hit the desktop within 1-???(usually 1) seconds my computer restarts.
I have the Soundblaster Audigy Platinum, an Epox 8KHA+ Motherboard and am running Windows XP Pro. I updated my sound software fully, but the trouble seems to have emerged nonetheless.
I'm wondering if switching to Windows XP Home Edition will solve this problem and if Microsoft themselves have mentioned anything of the problem itself. Do you understand how it works?
I'll try what I can from the above posts (if it will let me :().
On a seperate note, I would hate to have to reformat again, not having backed up my most recent (but important!) work. I have a seperate partition not in use; could I install XP on that, access my files through file sharing and then back them up on CD or disk? (or does file sharing not work like that)

Anyways, thanks for listening. Three cheers for free tech support.

Your's truly,
John

I've read everything above the line.

I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 8100 with XP Pro. It's only 1 month old and I just started getting the annoying Error Dialog box on every startup. It doesn't seem to hurt the performance of the machine but I want the dialog box to go away. I hate think that it's going to start slowing down on startup and go to blue screen and all the bad stuff I read above.

I've done everything Dell support has instructed (Startup / Maintenance / System / Advanced / Diable Report, except for serious / blah, blah, blah, but the darn box still pops up.

I've gone to Microsoft support and they have no documentation on this problem. I don't think they want to tell me how to fix it yet, but I'm ready to send the XP back up the shute!

I not as up-to-speed as you guys so I'm just looking for a download to help me out or a few mouse clicks.

Any ideas for a new laptop user?

Thanks, Bryan

After awhile I finally got fed up and did a completely clean re-install of XP Pro and the pop-up still shows up after restart. Nothing else happens. It's just a complete annoyance. There is nothing on my computer except for the OS and its updates. No drivers for additional hardware nor additional software.

The "Recovered from..." is still showing itself after every restart.

I too keep getting the "Recovered From..." message at startup. I'm using XP Home Edition, and I think the problem started when I installed a WinTV card last week (though I can't be sure as I've been messing with other things as AOL (I'm only using it for the free trial!) seems to have upset my computer a bit). I've got all the latest critical updates from Microsoft - there are some driver updates there that I haven't got but I'm not sure if they're relevant.

Can anyone help?

Well, it's been a few days since my first post here, but my problem seems solved!(though not for long I'm sure)

Here's what I did:

I went home, ripped out my soundcard, started up my computer (which it actually did), quickly deactivated all extra startup items and deleted everything in the C:\WINDOWS\Minidump folder. I restarted my computer a couple of times and to my amazement it started fine. After reinstalling my soundcard (NOTE: Taking it out may not have been neccessary) it is still running good. However, I've made it a point to delete everything in the Minidump folder before shutting down (everytime!), as this is where the problem seems to be originating. So far so good, as I've yet to see another "Recovered from Serious Error" startup message. I may have found a temporary solution, but for most of us, having a link to the Minidump on our desktop and having to clean it out every time we shut down is as much a hassle as dealing with that message at startup. For me, of course, it IS worth it, because my computer can actually function and I've had time to back up my important stuff to CD. Try cleaning out the minidump and then resetting. Pray you'll only have to do it once.

Hopefully Microsoft will release a patch, or Soundblaster if it would help, but considering the Windows XP Ad Campaign and the slow doom of a recession, I'm sure Microsoft is strapped for cash..... *scoffs*

Your's truly,
John

Well I am having the same error and I am not far of losing my insanity. I have tried everything to the point my computer has been completely rebuilt.

The error I get is the same as you all...

BCCode : d1 BCP1 : FF12A000 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : F9AB7F2D OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 0_0 Product : 256_1
Sorry to show it to you again....

My original system was

Advance 9 Motherboard with Via Chipset
PIII 800 Mhz
Hercules Prophet II GTS 32 MB
Sony Multiscan G400 Monitor 19"
Sundblaster Live! (with the s--- eMu10k chip) I also tried the new Audigy board with no change (Hope this saves someone the expense)
2 Hard Drives 10 & 20 GB
Ricoh CD writer (SCSI)
CD Rom x52
Epson 870 Printer
USB ISDN

I had 2 problems the first being the Advance9 motherboard being incompatable with the Nvidia chipset on the Grafix card (VIA admit this and are working towards a solution) the second this boot up error and the invitation to send a postcard to Microsoft.

So now my system contains the following... (not boring you all I hope)

Gigabyte P4 Titan GA-8IDX Motherboard (intel chipset)
New case with ATX power supply
P4 1.5 Ghz Chip
ATI Radeon 7500 64MB Grafix card
Sony Multiscan G400 Monitor 19"
on board (creative) sound
Same HD's
Same CD Drives, printer, USB ISDN
Creative Webcam

I have spent more money than I have to try and cure the problem and still no joy. Have tried updating WinXP manually and 1 update at a time. Now I am getting stressed and thinking of going back to led and chalk!! If anything I hope this helps people not to waste money replacing hardware to end up with no improvement.

What the F**k is Product 256 anyway?

If anywould like more discussion on systems then please feel free, the more talk the better.

Oh and for interest my 3D Mark 2001 score is 3356 with no tweaks (yet)

I'm having the same problem now. The only thing that has changed is the driver of my ATI 8500. Last night, I installed the 6025 version. Everything seems to run ok, except one BSOD after playing a game (Ghost Recon) and the error you are all mentionning. Oh, and something else : I don't know if it happened right after, but at one point, my Tiny Personal Firewall shut down by itself (no report in the events viewer)

The nearest to a solution is this explanation....One of the principle problems encountered in Windows XP is the dreaded "The system has recovered from a serious error" message that is displayed whenever XP is launched. This usually occurs after a non-compatible driver installation, especially one that crashes the system. The problem is not that the message is displayed, but that under certain circumstances it fails to be removed after user acknowledgment and is forever displayed each time the OS is launched. I have scoured the Microsoft knowledge-base and many support forums, but as yet I have failed to find a definitive solution. If any of our readers can describe the precise nature of this fault and can devise a general strategy to rid us of this ever-present start-up message, then I will be only too happy to post it here."

Had the same problem.
Solved it by uninstalling soundblaster live! value and creative (again!) 3D Geforce 2 Titanium divers in safe mode.
Seems that either the guys at creative should program some drivers that work or that the highly self-esteemed M$-XP team should make their $ystem more robust.

Hi. I also had the same problem, however, I found a solution that works really well! All you have to do is go into the system settings, click the advanced tab, and then click the error reporting button on the bottom-right of the window. You should see a new popup window. Here, click the "disable error reporting" bullet, and uncheck the "but notify me when critical errors occur" box. After that, no more annoying "recovered from serious error" messages at startup!

For you Creative folks, you are basically out of luck because Soundblasters are for some reason not compatible with WinXP, even with the latest drivers. My solution was to rip out the sound card and install my on-board sound drivers. After that, I have had no problems since.

Also, on some systems, after an error occurs, the NTFS partition on your hard drive will become corrupt. The solution is to start up in Recovery Console mode and run "chkdsk /p" (without the quotes) remember to include the "/p" parameter. If you do that, you will get rid of those annoying ntfs.sys errors that come up after a crash. Do this EVERY time your computer crashes or you can expect to have a trend of them.
