I'm aware of software (Magical Jellybean Keyfinder for instance) that will display then product key of a Windows XP installation. Is there any free software that will do the same thing for a non-boot able computer? Either a boot disk I can use on the target computer, or a way to find the product key if I put the non-bootable harddrive in another PC?

What you need is miniPe. Try downloading it, what you will have to do is insert that drive in another pc (only connect the drive you need the key from). Burn minipe to cd & boot from it. Run keyfinder. What it will do is load your registry & you will be able to view your product key. MiniPE is virus free & free legal software. Good luck

An interesting piece of software! I just downloaded MiniPe and it's compressed using .rar. The archive insists on a password to open it. What next?

I extracted the .iso, burned a CD, and booted up a machine with Server 2008, which is fully functional. The boot was fine, everything loaded but when I tried to load Regedit it threw an error "not a valid Win32 app". Server 2008 is built on the Vista kernal so the error fits! It should work fine with XP.
Kewl little app! Thanks someone!

I'm going to start a new thread with a little different problem but still in the same ballpark. I'll post it as Unbootable Laptops. If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them.
