anyone know if its possible to record from a cassette to the hd so i can make cds of my old tapes. i know a sound board will do it but don't want to spend that much money for one. thanks.

Do you have 'sound' on your PC? 99% of computers have a sound card on the PC, only older systems do not.
There will be a 'speaker' output, 'Microphone' and maybe 'Auxillary' input.
If you can identify these 'input' sockets, then take your cassette player to a Tandy or similar place and get the appropriate cable to plug into the casette player - audio out [usually RCA] and then a stereo small 'banana' plug for the sound card.
Most shops know what's needed for a PC sound card input.

You do have a soundcard or onboard sound in your PC right? If, so what type of cassette player is it?
If it's walkman or boombox, you'd need a cable w/ mini stereo headphone-type plugs on each end. One end goes to headphone out on the portable (or better, line out if it has one) and the other end to the line in jack on your soundcard or motherboard audio jacks.
On the other hand, if your using a cassette deck in a stereo/audiostack, you'll need a cable w/ a mini headphone plug on one end and RCA plugs on the other. Like before, the headphone plug end of the cable to your PC line in and the RCA plug end to the TAPE OUT jacks on your stereo receiver or amplifier.
On either method, you'll need to open the mixer in Windows' toolbar, select "properties" then "recording controls." Make sure "Line In" is selected and unmuted. Adjust the volume there and on your cassette player (if a portable) until you get a good volume level.
I use option two myself to record my vinyl LP collection to my PC to make CDs. I record and edit them using CoolEdit. Either cable type can be had for a few bucks at RadioShack.

Win.XP Intel P3 1600.
Newbie just getting started with pc. Do you really mean that I can copy music from my tape-recorder to my hd?? I don't have cdrw but have speaker and mike sockets which take stereo plugs and a line input socket (not sure whether mono or stereo plug). Is it ok (safe) to use a speaker output from the tape-recorder and plug it into the line in socket?? Please note that writer is not yet pc terminology competent so any reply should be in simple terms. Many thanks

yes vergina you can copy music to your hard drive. no its not safe to take music from the speaker out put too much power from them. on sterio systems theres useally a set of rca plugs wit line out not speakers writen on or around them those you use. . if you only have speaker out got radio shack for a resister kit for this they should have this in stock.
you can allso rip muscic stright from your cd,s useing free program called CDex do gooogle for it.

Thanks all for responding & sorry didn't know about starting new thread. More investigation required - will have to take things slowly as usual. Have fun...
