is there a good freeware program that will let me record videos from my desktop activity, im trying to explain to my friend how to do something.
That would be a lot of video. Why don't you try "print screen", send him images step after step.

mmm i think a video would work better. In the past i had a great program to do it, but then the authentication thing that it had to connect to got shut down so i can no longer use that program.

I have not tried it on WinXP but it worked great on Win98SE. There is a later version but it does not allow you to convert the created .avi file to a shockwave flash ojbect which greatly reduces the file size. The installer was incresed to over 9MB.
The program has since been bought out and cost a lot of money but this is the next to the last free version of CamStudio2. The zipped file size is 1.29MB.
Right click on the above link and select "Save target as" to get a copy of it.
Let me know once you have a copy so I can remove it from my web space.
Also let me know if it works ok on WinXP without having to run in in Compatibility mode.
Thanks and regards, Bryan

Forgot to mention...It works better if you select to record a Region vs the Full screen.

Some applications that were written for Win9x won't run on a WinXP machine but if you right click on it's shortcut or it's executable then select Properties then one of the available tabs is "Compatibility" where you can choose to the run the program in Win9x mode.
Thanks for letting me know, Bryan
