That was a bad mistake. You should use the norton uninstaller from their website:
http://service1.symantec.com/Suppor...
to remove all instances of it.

Then use reglcleaner:
http://majorgeeks.com/download460.html
and remove all instances of norton and symantec.

Download winpatrol:
http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html
and find out what all is running on startup.

Another option would be to disable all the startup programs to see if one of them is the problem.
Go to Start > Run. Type msconfig and click OK. Deselect all the items in the 'Startup' tab. Try a reboot and if it works ok, you can identify the problem application by adding them back a few at a time.
If it doesn't help, don't forget to reselect the programs that you need running 24/7.

1)Search for Autoruns Utility, download and install.
2)Download and Install GMER (www.gmer.net)
3) RUN > MSCONFIG > BOOT.INI - Select SAFEMODE.
4.Hard shutdown for 2 min.
5.Restart into SAFEMODE.
6) Run GMER and diagnose Trojans/spyware and rootkits. GMER will allow to destroy the rootkits and trojans.
7) Once trojans ec are removed, reboot in NORMAL mode (undo step 3 above).
8) Uninstall all antiviruses, but the one oyu think is good.

My guess is Symantec's AV is real culprit causing significant slow down.

If oyu have too many things on hard drive (data etc..), make DVD/CD/HD abckup. I suspect XP install is in near future inevitable.
