Do Start,
Run, then type,

sndvol32

Is the Mic un-muted in Windows Volume Control.
If Microphone is not displayed in V.C., then click Options, then Properties, check mark the Mic box to get it displayed.

At the top of this page, doing a Search yields little.

Try latest drivers ??--

If this is an Onboard (motherboard) sound card,
I would disable it in BIOS, then buy a Sound Card made for XP, and install it and drivers.
They are not all that expensive.

What are trying to do with the microphone? You may not need it at all. Try talking or recording at your keyboard without using anything. I know it sounds stupid, but try it.

Have you plugged the microphone into the correct socket? This is a common occurense.

Unity is strength.
