Comment:

I wanted to home network two win XP Pro PC's. I have realtek 8139 10/100Mbp NICs and a hub. I setup both computers. I ping one from the other and it works. But when I ping again only 50% succeeds. 50% packet loss occurs. I suspected cables/hub and made a direct cross connection. The result is the same. Only half of the pings works. I get "Request timed out" for some of the pings.
Network is running but not the way it's supposed to be.

PC's are fresh installs and everything is set to default. I tried different IRQ settings, different slots.
Someone suggested setting NIC speed to 10 Mbps/half duplex instead of auto-negotiation but haven't tried that yet. Anybody have any other ideas?
Thank you

Have you tried connecting the two computers using a crossover cable with no HUB?
Have you run netdiagnostics to see what it flags as being bad?
Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools/System information/ Tools from up top/Net diagnostics.

I changed one of the NICs to 3com and it's working now.
