Ok the problem is this, my pc was normal like 3 weeks ago, and now its kinda messed up, the prob is somehow the old msn messenger runs in the background, and when i open task manager and close it, it reappears, no matter how many times i close it, the only way to stop this is renaming the executable file in program files/Messenger directory. Does anyone know what is causing this, or how to remove this trojan/worm?? Oh yeah, the most annoying thing about it is when im connected (i use AOL 56k) even thou its not running my pc just pauses 1 second, and that makes my connection lag for like 10 seconds and then back to normal and after 10 min again lags, and the gap between the lags become lesser as i stay longer online. Could this problem caused by that msn messenger thing??? I connected with a diff ISP, and still the same thing, the exact same lag. I feel the lag when im playing an online game, i tried diff games, the same lag. When im not playing games i dont notice, the only way to notice when im not playing is to listen music, whem im listening to music it just skips for 1 second. Same thing, tried wit many diff songs, same thing. Any suggestions? My norton antivirus doesnt detect anything, is there any good antivirus, anti trojan, anti worm script program or web site available??? Plz help me, that lag is really annoying. Plz send me an email

If you're not signed on, I can't think of a reason windows messenger would be using any resources to speak of.
The reason it starts up automatically is because it is integrated into the operating system. (That's the answer I've seen so many times. Exactly what it means, I dunno but it sure is annoying) Just leave the exe renamed and if you use it regularly, create a shortcut to the renamed file to launch it.

try this site. there is a removal tool here that will allow you to uninstall Messenger completely from your system.

messenger is integrated into WinXP, and what that means is that is comes as part of the OS. Not like before, where it was your choice to install and run. When you start programs like explorer and outlook/outlook express, it automatically starts messenger. I think that the gaps and lags in your connection that you are getting is from the computer trying to start the program, but being that you renamed the .exe file, it cannot find it.

try the removal tool, and remember first to properly name the .exe beforehand!

post back to see if this helped!

http://www.dougknox.com/

click WinXP utilities on the left side, then about the 8th entry down in the list is the link to disable/uninstall messenger.

Give it a whirl!

Go to the symanatec site and download the virus removal tool, sometimes norton doesn't remove the entire thing, and the removal tool is better to use anyway i think.
