Hi I'm a wee bit concerned that some of the rated spy removal programs leave traces behind even when using 3 spy removal programs which are Spybot 1.3 Webroot Spysweeper 3 and Adaware 6 they all leave traces behind so which is the best spyware removal program?

I don't know Grant but I have Spybot and Adaware and I also have TROJ AGENT.AAP on my computer and I can't get rid of it no matter what I do. I have run Trend HouseCall and Norton with zero results. It has captured my homepage which reinstalls all the spyware over again immediately upon returning to the Internet. I wish I knew what to use myself.

Grant, I unchecked them from msconfig and from Task Mgr. (Processes), ran AdAware, got rid of everything, deleted my cookies, TIF's, right clicked on IE and set google.com for my home page, clicked on it and found the spyware site opening up again. Appreciate all the help but I am falling asleep at my desktop here. I'll get back to you tomorrow thru your email.
Many thanks Grant,

PESTPATROL, great program for finding trojans and removing them, software recently purchased by computer associates, i have ran ad-aware, spybot 1.3 and hijack this (all completely up to date) and removed 4000 objects all together on a machine before, then ran pest patrol after that and removed another 4000 just with pest patrol after the other programs said the machine was clean

8,000 items?? What were you doing - collecting them? or have you only just thought about protection? I've tried a number of different commercial programs & most seem to err too far on the side of safety so they flag up every cookie on the system for a start & then rampage through the whole system folder flagging files all over. Basic precautions (good firewall, up to date virus checker) install Spywareblaster or Spywareguard and scans with free progs Adaware & Spybot are adequate defences as long as they are combined with a bit of common sense.

Cessna, suspect your nasty is hiding in restore and getting put back each time you reboot. If that is the case, you can disable restore (destroys ALL your restore points), scan, re-enable. Maybe?

Thanks everybody,
Josh....this morning I downloaded PESTPATROL. I ran it and all it found was 5 cookies that pertained to spyware/malware. Adaware found 86 files with 6 of them in the Registry.
Ed....Yes I have Restore disabled. I just uninstalled Norton two days ago and installed PC-cillin. I'm definately going back to Norton.
johnr....I totally agree.
Now to get busy reinstalling WinXP.
Thanks again everybody.

Ad-Aware is my tool of choice followed up with SpyBot S&D.
I also run a program called crap cleaner (I didn't name it I just use it). www.ccleaner.com
This program will jet thru and remove old url's and a lot of other useless dribble from your system. I was shocked at how much it found first time I ran it on my system. 90megs of crap got removed safely.
To end up I run NBG Cleanr. It's in Russian but not hard to figure out.
Now just a idea I had is if you're not deleting the program's quarantine files then some of the other Ad/Spy programs will pick up on them and make a fuss like something's wrong.I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...
