What I meant to ask in this thread

http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/155013.html

is, can I unplug the crossover cable from the main pc that's turned off, and plug it into the modem port and how do I get the internet on the 2nd PC?

probably NOT, because your modem's LAN port requires a 'straight thru' network cable., to get the internet on your 2nd pc when the main pc is turned off, unplug the network cable from the modem to the main pc and plug it into your 2nd pc instead.

So I can't do it with a crossover cable? But I did it a few months ago when the main PC was getting repaired (Sp2 put on it, virus removal and internet testing)

well ... you can try ... if it works, great, if not, get a 'straight thru' cable ... trying will not do any harm.

lol idk if Optus lets me have more than one MAC address (or if I should use a straight through cable, but I've plugged it in and it worked straight away, no setting changed on the 2nd pc. Weird!
