Ok, heres the deal,
I go to the hardware and look at the status of the CD
Rom drive, its there and it says its working properly, but
when i put a disk in it doesnt do anything, i havent
installed any Windows updates, (as i heard that the last
one knocks out your CD Rom anyway), well, i reinstalled
it, including drivers but yet no result....Anyone with any helpful pointers will be appreciated,
Thankyou in advanceDubster

Hello;
As far as I know, you need to make sure that that CD-ROM data reader is working fine or damaged -put an Audio CD into your CD-ROM and see, if it works, that means that your Audio Reader is working fine in return, your CD-ROM is connected and working.. that also means that your DATA Reader is damager or its lense needs to be cleaned. That happened to me and I've inserted a CD-Cleaner that solved this out.
But make sure that the CD is connected first with an Audio CD.

Done all that...the CD doesnt even start spinning when i
put an audio CD in? Theres absolutely nothing happening
when i insert a disk.

Information would be useful like: what CPU u got, also about the CD-ROM when did it stop working? Did u make any upgrades or installs etc? Were you always running XP and CD-ROM was fine, what happend before and at the moment when the CD-ROM stopped working ... but perhaps the data cable could be lose or like Walid suggested, clean the CD Lense. Try this: make sure cables are tight, pop in Audio CD and then restart the system. Just when it's about to start loading windows listen if the system will access CD-ROM drive, also during the logon and when u double click your computer. But do those things after restart. CD-ROM drive should at least try to access CD even with its lense dirty. It starts reading it when CD starts spinning at the propriate speeds. So I guess we could narrow down the problem...

I have the same problem. it would play music cd but not others..I have not tried the laser cleaner, but can some one explain why the music cd would work...If it doesn't read data as some one say the data head has a problem( dirty), why would the music plays? Does cd-dvd player has 2 optical heads? I went to Fry's, Best Buy....No one seems to know the answer..
Thanks

I have the same problem, my computer will play DVD's but nothing else, not CD ROMs or audio CDs. This all went wrong after I watched a DVD on windows XP. The CDs spin but my computer just doesn't read them.
Any help would be of great help.
