What is the best program for opening RAR files that will also allow them to play on Windows Media Player? I still have Windows XP. If they do not play on Windows Media Player, what is the best player that they will play on?

I want to be able to copy them to a disk and watch later on, if possible.

WinRAR obviously opens RAR files, so does WinZip.

7-Zip is free, and will open them.

RAR files are just a compressed collection of other files. A RAR archive can contain any number of things from music, to text documents. Therefore, no media player will "play RAR files". If the RAR file contains a media file (such as a MP3) you will be able to play it (the MP3 file, not the RAR) after opening the RAR file.

I'm going to pretend you didn't download this file from the net. But it sounds like the file is double .rar'ed. Extract the contents of the file to a folder. If the file has several rar files inside then, open then one at a time and extract them into a single folder. Enter the new folder and click on one of the files. The movie should be inside. Drag it from the .rar window to your desktop.

I hate dealing with these things. I sat here for an hour and a half compressing files and they still won't open. What do I do now?

Your computer probably doesn't have enough memory. I've found that WinRAR and WinZIP take so much longer to compress/decompress the files than 7zip does. Google 7zip and download it from the first link, trust me you will not regret it.

Thanks for the help. It kept opening and recreating files and was slowing down my machine horribly. I went into the properties and compressed all of my files on my machine entirely then went back and deleted the DVD RAR files and anything attributed to it. My machine had gotten down to 35% in memory and when I deleted all that stuff and restarted, it shot back up to 71%.

I figured instead of going through all this trouble, I'll just buy the DVD when I can afford it. I was just trying to avoid having to buy it. Thanks again for the help. It would have helped if I knew what I was doing.
