Start with the device manager and event viewer for conflicts and errors.

Check your temperatures, in the bios, or download and use 'Speedfan'.

Check your memory.

There is a version to create a bootable floppy diskette and/or an ISO for creating a CD.
Run it overnight and any failures are unacceptable.

Reboots can be caused by all sorts of things, but shutdowns are usually caused by overheating or because of a faulty PS.

If this is a desktop computer....

Failing power supplies are common and can cause your symptoms.
Check your PS.
See response 4 in this:

Open up your case and find the make of the power supply - if it's made by BESTEC, as it is in some cheaper HP models, that's likely to be the source of your problem.

Make sure the cpu fan is spinning when the computer is running.
If it isn't don't use the computer until you have replaced the fan.

If it is spinning
- but it and/or the heatsink under it is filthy, remove the power to the case, clean the fan and heatsink, and if you can easily remove the cpu fan, it is a lot easier to clean the top of the heatsink, which you also need to do.
- if the cpu fan makes rattling or rumbling or screeching sounds, most likely to be noticable when the computer is first turned on after the computer has cooled to room temp, the fan bearings are failing and the fan must be replaced as soon as possible.
