I've been having a problem lately with random user accounts showing up when I log on. I am the only user of my PC, but I have user accounts enabled so I can password protect it in the event that someone tries to steal/use it without my authorization. The account names usually show up with random letters and symbols, such as zhu$ or xxx or h$ij&. I had tried to use a tutorial to get Remote Desktop to work on XP Home, but I couldn't do it right, and I opened up a port (3309 or something) for my PC to listen for incoming connections. I'm afraid that this has left the door wide open for hackers, even though I'm running a firewall and constantly run scans to check and make sure there are no programs compromising my security. Does anyone know how I can stop this?

Oh, my. Reload the system from scratch.

Read up and understand how to apply and use best practices.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Where are you seeing these new accounts? Also, close the port that you opened.

I see them on my login screen. I'm going to try and find the tutorial that I had used.

After a long and arduous search, I was able to close the offending ports. Thanks.
