I recently did a search to find the source and remedy for a computer problem I am experiencing.... a regular "knock-knock" sound from the speakers on my Windows computer. I have tried googling and searching here but have not found anything that gives me any idea if this is a virus type of problem (I have run antivirus scans with most recent updates), or as some suggest it could be a sign of impending hardware failure... does anyone else have any similar experiences?

Poping/tapping noises comeing from speakers are caused by different things or a combination to them. It is normally refered to as hardware malfunction/failure. Could be corroded speaker wires, failing filters, bad solder connection are even having nonshielded wiring and that wiring running beside a voltage line as like a power plug wire, or any other source of magnetic/electric impulse. It can also be caused by speaker cone deteriation or foriegn things(dust/bugs) Take your pick.
