at random, my computer will restart..anyone had this problem before? i'm just on the internet or doing work etc and the computer just instantly reboots..
could it be my power supply is messed up, or is it xp?

Maybe the fan? I had a Gateway laptop that did the same thing. I stopped using "GO BACK" and put a new fan in and it stopped.

I get random restarting also.
I have a Win TV card installed and when
Im watching TV and go from Full screen mode
to window mode my machine reboots.
Dunno whats causing it maybe video drivers?
It has happened once after I've burned a
CD as well.~B

I have had the same or similar problem:
Everything is running fine then the screen flashes black, with some incoherent text for about half a second then it restarts. I don't have time to read what the text is.What OS are you using? Unfortunately I did two things to my machine within a short time of each other. I loaded windows XP and I changed my video card, since the old one wasn't supported under windows XP.
I can't be sure that it is a windows XP problem, but I never had the problem before I started running on windows XP and when I boot into Linux I haven't had the problem (though I haven't spent much time in Linux since loading XP for non related reasons). I have had a number of crashes and "recovery from a serious error". I'm going to reformat my hard drive and do a clean install of XP when I get a chance, hopefully that will fix it. Maybe XP didn't like the "update" style of installation.
Does anyone else have any info on this kind of restarting error?

Power sags can cause a restart; A UPS might help, and as stated above, over heating can be a problem.
Also try this thread:

I have just installed XP for the 3rd time and completly at random it just switches off too. Can go for days then all of a sudden shutdown, It`s not overheating, 300W power supply. I tried dissabling power management, still same. It done it yesterday and I wasent even using it. I was thinking it might be my aging Voodoo 4500 pci video card. Hope some one figures this out, driving me nuts. This is a problem.

I have just read this thread in page 2, might be of use "XP Reboot! Never used to!!" Going to give it a try anyway.

there is a function within xp
which makes the machine just restart
if it ever encounters a error to stop
from corrupting your data.
which does actually work :) meaning
no fixes on scandisk but still doesn't
explain why it should run into all these
errors, you can turn this function off
but it will then just blue screen
and have to run itself though scandisk
when rebooted instead of automatically
restarting. I don't seem to have the
problem at present luckily :).
but will still happen when it runs into
a error IU did turn it off but I found
that leaving it on was more safer for my
data.

hmmmmm
i too have had this problem of random restarting. i was first thinking powersupply (hardware instead of xp), but my upgrade from a 300w to a 400w changed nothing. i then thought "maybe my ram, or even the heat sink," but after testing these, the random restarting did not stop. i even tested my mouse and tablet, but these do not seem to be the root. i have noticed the most problems in photoshop 6 and ocasionally using ie. my next test is to try a different processor, see if that fixes anything.if omega is correct, then how might i be able to disable the restarting mechinism? that still doesnt explain the source of the errors.
After testing a different processor (athlon 1 ghz instead of athlon xp 1800) i will post my findings here.
please give me a breif email "how to" if you know how to disable the restarting mechinism. thank you very much,
Seth
