Since i built my new pc about 3 months ago i have an annoying problem.I will try to give you a thorough description.....

When browsing with IE6 (sp1) i will get a blue square under the mouse. When this appears the mouse will only move horizontaly not vertically. The pc will beep once. It will stay in this state for 30 seconds and then reboot. When the pc reboots and i connect to the internet again all temp internet files have been deleted.

There is no pattern to this happening it is completley random and only when browsing the internet. Nothing is displayed in the event viewer after this has happened.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks, ASE

All temps are well within limits.

Tried this ??

Right click My Computer,
Properties,
Advanced tab,
Settings button (Starup and Recovery),
uncheck Automatically Restart.

Now you should get an error message when it happens again.

My computer is a AMD AthlonXP 2.2/512ddr computer, it loves to piss me off and restart for no reason at all. Sometimes when i hit enter, after i have moved the mouse, when i am doing home work, when i am playing games you name it, it restarts. I tried chuck's sollution and it has stopped restarting as often but it still does maybe once a day now (no error message is given instead). I have norton anti virus (which says i have no virus's) and i have downloaded Spybot incase of spywhere.. if anyone has a solution to my problem it would be a great help.

I'm glad I'm not the only one this is happening too. it just started for me when I rebuilt my system at Xmas and installed a Geforce 5700 video card on a Soyo Dragon motherboard with and XP2000 athlon chip.
Fixes I tried are update all drivers ( video, motherboard etc), switched out memory, switched out mouse, installed all microsoft updates with no luck.
System invariably reboots after I start it up in the morning when I click something with the mouse, when it comes up again system is stable. interestingly enough when the system is shut down double clicking the mouse will now start the system up ( go figure! ).
if anyone has any suggestions I'd be greatfull as my next step is to look into the power supply although my thoughts keep wandering back to the new vido card.

I'm having the same issue after switching from my newer motherboard to an older one. My brother got a 2500 Barton chip and since it didn't work in his motherboard, we switched. I'm running a Biostar M7VIP with a 1700 Athlon, 384 megs DDR266, Western Digital hard drive, and a new Radeon 9600XT.

I'm trying the thing you said now about the restarts. If that works, my thanks to you.

Well, I fixed my problem. I put in an old 20 gig hard drive as the master, installed XP to it and I'm using the 80gig as a slave. Since this problem *only* happened in IE, it works fine off the 20 gig drive, which means that apparently my 80 gig is having problems. I've had it since May of 2003 so it's not even a year old, but I'm not sure if it's a power issue that was happening or if it is just dying. All the SMART data i'm getting from SpeedFan, however, says the drive is in prime performance so maybe it has more to do with my power supply. Either way, it's not having the issues now, so i'm going to stay with my 20gig/80gig combination.

Ok, final post about this.

The problem was not the hard drive, nor was it the video card. It was the power supply. The drive itself started to act up more and more, so maybe it got damaged, but the cause of the reboots was in fact my 400w power supply, which only had an amperage of 11A on the +12volt. I went out and got a new 350w power supply that has 16A on the 350w power supply and all problems are gone.
