Hello again.. Maybe it is not a problem, but I need some clarification on this. Suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I bought this used pc about a month ago. Just use it for simple applications; typing, browsing, music. Everything works fine until this very moment. I ran cpu-z on that pc last night and noticed that on SPD tab, system RAM (256MB) is detected on slot #2 while slot #1 is empty. So I opened the case and reinstall the RAM into the first slot. But I think there is no noticeable increase in system performance, at all. The question is.. is it ok to install RAM on other than first slot (as long as the system can boot up fine)? TIA.

You always want the RAM installed into the closest slot to the processor.

It depends on the board ram slot layout and even what type of ram if in single slots or two slots at a time.

256 is too small an amount. Consider adding a 512 or gig chip

You mean you did nothing other than move the RAM from slot 1 to slot 2? why would you think doing that would improve performance? 256MB is 256MB.

"You mean you did nothing other than move the RAM from slot 1 to slot 2? why would you think doing that would improve performance?" .. That I would call "experimenting" :-), thought maybe 1st slot should be used first coz (I think) this 'distance' thing might influence data transfer between RAM and processor. Just like Brian said, "You always want the RAM installed into the closest slot to the processor."

Really appreciate all input from you guys anyway. Thanks very much.
