Is it necessary to reinstall OS after increasing RAM to get better Performance ?

In a word... No. You may have to adjust your BIOS so it sees all of the RAM but Windows XP will see it regardless.

Software gives me a headache.

The other change would be to increase the swap file size to take advantage of the increased memory.
