Raid0/seperate sata controller for pagefile?

June 22, 2009 at 19:09:29
Specs: Windows XP x64, Athlon 4000+ 2.41Ghz
i currently have windows xp x64 installed on 2x160GB SATA hard drives in a RAID 0 configuration.

what's the best approach for setting up the pagefile in terms of performance and optimization given the following options:

- keep the pagefile on the RAID 0 configuration
- add a separate SATA hard drive for the pagefile to the same SATA controller that the RAID 0 setup resides on
- add a separate SATA hard drive for the pagefile to a separate SATA controller

thanks for any suggestions.

The absolute best would be to put the page file on a separate disk and controller. However, the cost of doing that would probably farrrrrrrrrrrrr out weigh the benefit. You are probably better off getting more RAM (since you have x64, your probably limited by your hardware before your OS) and hoping to make less use of the page file. Or, get more ram, create a RAM drive with anyone of numerous programs out there, and put the page file on it.

Well if you really want the best, get an iram or similar product.

How exactly are you maxed out at 4GB? Your operating system will let you go much higher than that, and I've never heard of a 64-bit capable motherboard that only supported 4GB of RAM.

Sorry, allow me to clarify... i am maxed out at 4GB given that is
how much ram i have at my disposal and i can't really justify
buying more for this rig...

i am really just looking to choose the best option for my set up
given what i currently have to work with.

Your best option? Leave the pagefile at system managed. No drive and no controller required.

You are appling server configs to a workstation. No reason to do so. You will not experience any performance gain.

Raid0 was a terrible choice. Either drive hiccups and you lost it all. Do regular tested backups.
