Comment:

I have just setup a RAID 1 config with a integrated Promise FastTrack 100 Lite and 2*80GB Maxtor ATA100 HDDs. I got the correct drivers and hit F6 during setup.

The text portion of setup completed just fine, but when the system restarted to go to the GUI portion of setup, I got the BSOD and a stop error claiming it was preventing damage to my computer.

Any ideas on how to clean up this stop error? Why doesn't XP like RAID?

Thanks

What board do you have? DO you know that some boards also support the raid as individual hard drive connectors?

I have a Soyo SY-P4ISR. Yes, I used to use the 2nd set of IDE connectors as standard IDE, but decided to use RAID 1 to protect my data.

I simply cannot get past this blue screen! Any other ideas?

Thanks

Since you have been using system and had XP installed what my suggestion is :

1.Format both HD's
2.Go to your BIOS and change the "First
boot device, second boot device and third
boot device to ATA-100 in the advanced
BIOS features.
3.Re-boot the system and enter the RAID
SETUP menu by pressing the combination
keys(per manual) during booting process.
4.Setup the RAID array as desired 0,1 etc.
5.Now that you have completed your RAID
setup,power down your computer.
If you wan't to make sure your RAID setup
ok,you can boot the computer and watch the
startup screen while the BIOS go through
the POST procedure and initialising the
RAID setup.
6.Now cold boot the system with your XP CD
in the CD-ROM(make sure BIOS are setup to
boot frm the CD_ROM)and do a clean install
do not forget to install the third party
RAID drivers as prompted during the
installation process.
If you do windows will install the
default RAID drivers and most of the time
they do work well.
7.Re-set BIOS to boot from the HD.

I hope this helps.

Do not forget to enable the RAID function in
your BIOS prior to doing any of the above.

Oh well...

I tried what you said. I even upgraded my BIOS and removed every component possible, but I still get a BSOD when Windows tries to boot for the first time. It get all the way through the setup process, but when it tries to boot to the OS, I get a STOP error. It tells me to check all the HDDs for errors (I know they are good), and to check the connections (these are good too).

I am really at a loss. I may end up calling MS tech support, supposedly if you buy the product retail - they give you unlimited installation help. Ha ha ha. I guess we'll find out about that!

Thanks for your help.

Did XP work normally before the RAID setup?
If you did not have XP installed before this and if you have a Geforce video card - this could be your problem.
If so then replace it with another video card and let the computer complete the initial booting process and then put the Geforce video card in.
Hope this helps.

I found this article on the soyo support area:

Definition of "RAID":

1. An acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, a family of techniques for managing multiple disks to provide desirable cost, data availability, and performance characteristics to host environments.
2. A redundant Array of Independent Disks.

Important:

Raid setup can only be done if you have more then one hard drive and the drives need to be identical or as close as possible to prevent any possible errors. RAID hard drives need to be connected to the Raid Channel which is IDE 3&4.

To setup RAID on Win2K,or WinXP, you must install the raid driver, prior to installation of your Operating system.

The procedure is simple and easy to follow:
1.you need to create your Raid array before you install the operating system. Raid array can be either Raid 0, Raid 1 or Raid 0+1. this depends on what you choose and also governed by the board you have.

2.When your system boots up, it will ask you to press "Ctrl + H"(Highpoint RAID) or "Ctrl + F"(Promise RAID). by pressing the mentioned keys you will enter the RAID BIOS in order to set up Raid on your hard drives. for instruction on how to set up the desired RAID mode, please check the RAID section of manual provided with the board.

Procedure:

1. You need to copy the Raid driver for the particular motherboard you have, from the Soyo CD under the folder call "Raid", or Download from website, to your floppy disk. - you will need it later. Check the manual or website for the proper Raid driver.

2. Make sure the onboard Raid is enable in the BIOS, some boards have to be done by jumper on the motherboard in addition to the settings in the bios, some only need to be enabled in the bios, other may already enabled by default, check you manual.

3. During the installation of your Operating System, when the installtion CD prompt you to press "F6" to install third party SCSI driver, then do so,after that press "S" to specific the location, which is "A" your floppy drive.

4. follow the onscreen instruction and the drivers will be installed properly.

5. Once the installation of the Operating System is completed, go to the bios and set the first boot to "SCSI", then it will boot into windows.

Cautions:
1. Certain hard drive requires you to remove all the jumpers from the drive if it is set as Single drive, the most common one is Western Digital.

2. You need to connect at least one drive to IDE 3 & 4. Certain board only allow you to plug in one drive per channel.

3. You need to save all the folders and the files from the "Raid" folder of the Soyo CD to your floppy. You might get "error code 18" during setup, if the drivers are not copied correctly to the floppy disk.

Thanks again!

I too had found that page on Soyo's website and followed it's instructions. XP Setup is finding the HDDs and is seeing them as one drive as it should, but when XP tries to boot, it gives me the BSOD.

XP claims that the drivers that Soyo gave me are not XP certified, but I don't think that has a lot to do with it, as many others are using them with no problem.

What I did find though on a different message board (can't remember where now) is that the FastTrack 100 and XP combo does not like NTFS at all. If you try to format the HDD with NTFS (as I did) you will get BSODs until the end of time.

I'm going to try to repartition and format using FAT32 and see if that help any. I'll post back the results.

Thank you for all your help!

Success!! Finally!

It appears that WinXP simply refuses to install correctly if you have a RAID configuration and use an unattended answer file (winnt.sif). I did it by hand and it worked just fine (though now I have to change 'Documents and Settings to something that makes more sense).

Thanks again.
