Specs:
AMD Athlon 951Mhz
1gig ram
40gig hd
windows xp professinal
Previous video card: GeForce 2 MX/MX 400
New video card: ATI Radeon 9000 PRO 128MB AGP
-------------------
Problem 1: (When I have the GeForce 2 and drivers installed.)I install the newest VIA motherboard drivers. I uninstall the GeForce 2 Drivers, using Add/Remove Programs. Remove the GeForce 2 under device manager. I the shutdown, take out the GF 2, and put in the Radeon. Turn the computer on, and it boots fine. The computer notices the Radeon, Ive tried both using the wizard and the CD which came with the card. I install the drivers, and then when I boot back up, it goes to windows, and for some reason it wont run setup files, and various other things, but runs SOME exe's fine. If I restart again, thinking it will fix the problem, and before Windows XP boots, it says "File is corrupt or missing SYSTEM32\hal.dll." I also found references to this error on Microsoft.com, and I used their method of fixing it, but after fixing hal.dll, it says this "File is corrupt or missing C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". I also found references to that error on Microsoft.com, and fixed that like they said. Then my computer will boot into windows after using the recovery console. Yet, none of my peripherals work (i.e. mouse, keyboard).
Problem 2:
I reformat with the Radeon in the AGP slot. Windows installs fine, boots fine for the first time and so forth. Then not until I install the drivers again does it come across the same problem in the same manner. The only difference is that it doesnt say hal.dll is corrupted, it just says "File is missing or corrupt C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM".
Conclusion:
I would really appreciate some help here, Ive been trying for days... My computer works fine without the drivers installed, but it wont work to full potential (no graphics support. 16bit colors and 800x600 res.). It also doesnt even know the card is there. I really hope someone can help... should I switch to a different OS? What to do? ATI customer service didnt even help, I hope someone here will...

I've now heard of a whole bunch of people conplaining with this card and Windows XP, but I had the very same Nvidia and now have a Radeon VE/7000. Installed fine like yours, but finally I had your problem. Do this:
1: Download the latest driver. See if you can boot up normally, and if not, do these things:
2: Boot up through the repair console and safe-mode. Check in the device manager and see if it's conflicting with something (basically with a IRQ). And once again, if it is conflicting, do this:
3: Either try changing the IRQ of one or the other device. Usually, XP doesn't allow you to change the IRQ (you may change it to anything, if you can). If you can't, check the memory resources and see if they are corrupted or conflicting against themselves. If they are, either your card is trying to compete with itself (corrupted video BIOS), or the other card (that's conflicting) needs to have a new driver, IRQ needs to be changed in the BIOS, or will need to be taken out. That's all I know.

Had troubles with a high end Asus card.
Found out that there is nothing to do but wait till revised drivers come out.
The newer the card, the longer the wait.
If no revision for your drivers yet, you'll have to use XP's generic.
The Old Tech.
