My QuickTime player (the most recent version) refuses to play AVI files. Sometimes it plays corrupted sound from the film, but doesn't show the video. It doesn't even resize it's window to match the video size.
When I try to play MOV, it resizes the window and plays sound correctly, but no video is visible.
I have both Combined Community Codec Pack and K-Lite Codec Pack installed, but they didn't help. I got an error message from QuickTime that I should download a component to get the movie playing, and I did (it suggested the Xvid codec), but no help.

What am I missing? My boyfriend is a computer mechanic but even he didn't know what to do. He said those codecs should be integrated in the QuickTime player already and I shouldn't need to install anything more.
I have GSpot and I investigated a MOV file I tried to open, and got this:
"Rendering failed. Following is the error reported by DirectShow:
0x80040111: [unknown]"

GSpot also tells me the video codec used in the video is XVID with "Status undetermined".

GSpot shows no problems with codecs and filters except a file missing in ACM Base (ac3filter.acm).
Is this the problem, and how to fix it?

Personnaly I hate Quicktime.
My suggestion would be to download either 'Media Player Classic' or 'VLC' to play AVI files. Then get a video converter and convert your MOV files to DIVX.

But I am trying to open an AVI file in Quicktime so I can save it as MOV. I have Media Player Classic, but it doesn't play MOV files.
Also my video editor can't save as MOV.

Why would you want to convert a cool DIVX video into a crappy MOV video?

"Also my video editor can't save as MOV"

Join the rest of us and dump Quicktime/MOV. ;-)

I want to convert a divx movie to MOV because MOV videos look perfect when sent to Youtube, but my Divx/Xvid coded videos look like crap. They are all horribly pixelated. My friend posted one of my videos to Youtube after comverting it to MOV, and the video was clear and looked exactly the way it looks when played from my computer.

I downloaded and installed VLC and it did play an old MOV video correctly. Then I tried to convert an AVI file to MOV with VLC.
VLC wouldn't play this new video, it only played the sound.
It seems I really am missing a codec, but what and why?
Why won't any player play MOV files?

I also tried uploading the new MOV I created to Youtube. Youtube responded with "Failed (invalid format)".
I guess this means I don't have the correct codecs installed... I am truly puzzled and frustrated.

I really don't do anything with a trial version of that Video Cleaner, and how does the Youtube uploader help me in this problem? I have no problem uploading my videos, I have a problem in converting them to MOV and playing those MOV files. :(

Just thought there may be something there that you could use. I don't know as much about youtube as you do since you use it. I use vlc to play mov files so I am not as familiar with it as you. Did you try to google for converting to mov. I would think there are some progs that will, but they are not free. Is there any help available at youtube? Hope you find a solution.

My problem is not Youtube related at all. I just can't play or make MOV files because I am missing something necessary, I just can't figure out what. I did a lot of googling before I wrote here. I didn't find any solution for this.

From what you said in response #7 that you wanted to convert dixv to mov I thought the first link I gave you would do that but it seems it is not that simple. How did your friend convert your video that looked so good? Here are some Quicktime forums that may contain an answer. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...

My boyfriend simply opened the video in Quicktime player and saved it to MOV. I tried that but because my Quicktime couldn't even play the video, I couldn't save it either.

Questions to ponder: Do you both have the same version of qt? Could your qt have a problem? Did the file that he had play fine originate from him, and if yours is a copy of it,could it be corrupt. Sort of grasping at straws here since I use Media player and vlc mostly. Maybe try posting problem at one of the qt forums I suggested. Since his worked ok and he seems to be knowledeable of computers maybe the 2 of you can find a solution. Aren't computers fun? lol Good luck. Bluejay

The video was originally mine, so it wasn't corrupted. He has the same version of QT and I have even reinstalled QT and no help.
He knows a LOT of computers (so do I) but even he can't say what's wrong with my QT and why it won't play anything.
Even the sample MOV in QT folder doesn't play, so there must be a problem within the program itself. I just can't figure out what.
I browsed those QT forums and many people had the same problem as me, but there were absolutely no answers or solutions...:(
