Hi all.

Everytime I play a quicktime movie, I get an error that says
"QuicktimePlayer: QuickTimePlayer.exe - No Disk" the small text says "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E:"
Now E is my CD-rom drive, so quicktime seems to want to first look at my first CD-rom drive before it will play the movie on my hard drive I selected. After getting the error message, I have three options: Cancel, Try Again, or Continue. It makes no difference which one I select. After hitting Cancel about seven times, the movie on my hard drive will eventually play. Very annoying.
I did a search on computing.net and found a lot of various suggestions as to the problem; I'm not the only one who has had this error apparently. Some people suggested this was a Windows CD-rom autoplay issue, but my autorun is confirmed in registry to be off. Someone suggested it was a "blaster worm" virus, but I'm not sure about that either. I used Spybot to check for problems, and also immunize, but that did not fix the error. Uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime did not help. I've tried both versions 6.3 and 6.5.
Please give me a suggestion as to what I should do next. And ideas are appreciated.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I found this using google. I don't know what an MRU file is, however.
http://www.cvsnt.org/pipermail/cvsnt/2003-October/008812.html

"It seems that a removable usb drive (such as an iomega zip drive) connected
to a system, but without a disk in it could cause this situation.
The articles I've read relate to QuickTime qttask.exe, wnEdt, Outlook, and
XEmacs.
The QuickTime solution was to remove recent file history from the MRU files
list. This is because QuickTime tried to scan those drives for files.
The others really didn't offer up a solution."

Hi CGMneon,

MRU = Most Recently Used

Those are stored in the registry, however, if you're not familiar with the registry, then do NOT start altering that one. No need to also, I think.

Hang on a moment, I'm checking where QuickTime would be looking, as most programs have their own MRU list...

I've used two programs that say they will either "clean" or "clear" my MRU (most recently used) list, but so far my problem persists.
If I understand the theory for the second post, by editing the MRU list, I may find an entry that is pointing to my CD-rom. By removing that entry, it is assumed that Quicktime will stop scanning my CD-rom drive (E:) for files.
I still do not know how to edit, or even look up, my MRU list for quicktime.

Thanks for the reply, svg.
I didn't know this was a registry issue. Any help is appreciated.

Well, if the info in your link is correct,
clearing the MRU list will do the trick.

Okay, here are a few possibilities,

QuickTime>Edit>Preferences
Player Preferences:
'Automatically play movies when opened'
'Show HotPicks movie automatically'

QuickTime Preferences:
has some to show stuff automatically

I'll check the registry now...

To clear the Windows MRU:
Rightclick on the taskbar, choose 'properties',
then the 'start-menu' tab, and select customize.
The 'Clear list' on the first page clears the start-menu of MRUs, but that's not it, select the 'Advanced' tab, and press 'Clear List' at the bottom of that page.

Now the registry,
I haven't found a specific MRU list for Quicktime, which I would expect to. Maybe my setup is different. I'll have another look.

But I have found out that QuickTime stores its preferences in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\QuickTime

By deleting(or moving to another folder) both the files (they will be regenerated)
QuickTime.qtp
QuickTimeFavorites.qtr

You may be able to clear the list. Try it.

Wow, svg, thanks a lot!

I think deleting those two files was the answer.

When I first double-clicked my quicktime movie file after deleting those files, I got about 6 "No disk in the drive" errors in a row. Then about 5. Then 4. Then 3, 2, 1. I get no errors now. I think the two files you mentioned regenerated and were clearing themselves out.
I hope all who have this kind of problem again read your post.
