Ok..Its happened again. Whenever I open quicktime, even if I just open a quicktime file over the web, quicktime creates a new command in system config utility/startup, to startup on boot. I don't want it to startup on boot but I want to keep quicktime because I need it for some items. I need to know how to use quicktime without it creating a new startup command and also, how can I delete all the other start up commands in system config utility/start up. I have previous items listed there that I dont use and that I have actually deleted! What do I do to fix these problems? Thanks!

First, about QuickTime:
1. Open QuickTime from Control Panel. Click on the tiny arrow to the right of the drop-down menu of the main screen ("About QuickTime") and go to "Browser Plug-in".
Uncheck the last item ("QuickTime system tray icon").
2. Then go to "Update Check" and uncheck the option that says "Check for updates automatically".
3. Close QuickTime.
4. Go to Start/Run and type in "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
5. Go to the "Start-up" tab and uncheck all references to QuickTime that you might find there. Click Apply/OK and restart Windows when you're told to do so.Now, for the second problem. I understand that you can delete items that you have already unchecked in msconfig/Start-up tab.
To do so, you have to edit the Registry, so be careful when you follow this process:
1. Go to Start/Run and type in "regedit" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
2. In the left pane, go to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key and click on the [+] sign next to it.
3. Scroll down the left pane and click on the [+] signs next to these items:
[+]Software
[+]Microsoft
[+]Windows
[+]Current version4. Under Current version in the left pane you should see several entries, some of which are called "Run", "RunOnce", "RunServices" (you may have only one or two of them).
5. Click once on "Run" (not on the [+] sign, but on the yellow folder) and look at the right pane. You may find some of the things you say you have already deleted listed on the right pane.
6. If so, right-click on each of them and click on "Delete".
7. Repeat the process for each unwanted item, and also for those you may find when you click on "RunOnce" on the left pane.
8. Go back to the left pane and go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.
9. Click on the [+] sign next to it.
10. Scroll down the left pane and click on the [+] signs next to these items:
[+]Software
[+]Microsoft
[+]Windows
[+]Current version11. Under Current version in the left pane you should see several entries, some of which are also called "Run", "RunOnce", "RunServices" and/or "RunServicesOnce".
12. Click once on "Run" (not on the [+] sign, but on the yellow folder) and look at the right pane. You will probably find some of the things you say you have already deleted listed there.
13. If so, right-click on each of them and click on "Delete".
14. Repeat the process for each unwanted item, and also for those you may find when you click on "RunOnce" and the other "RunXXX" entries on the left pane.
15. Close that window, restart you computer and see whether the unwanted references have disappeared. They should not be there now.

I have this same problem with Quicktime. I have removed it from the taskbar, however it still runs in the background.
I disabled it in start-up using MSCONFIG and also edited the registry key, however everytime you launch Quicktime it puts itself back into the start-up sequence to run in the background!
The program is qttime.exe, who knows what it does.

Homac and Chunko:
Do you have QuickTime 6? I have never had that problem in my system, nor have my friends who also have version 6. The file that Homac mentions (qttime.exe) does not exist on my computer nor on those of my friends, either.
Perhaps you have a previous version and we might be talking about different things. You may have a problem I might not be aware of.
In my C:\Program files\Quicktime folder there's a file called "qttask.exe" (not "qttime.exe"), but it doesn't run by itself nor does it create an entry under MSCONFIG unless I double-click on it, which I never have to do.
In fact, either Quicktime Player (for movies/video) or Quicktime Viewer (for pictures) open by themselves only when needed, and they don't create a reference in my MSCONFIG afterwards. I really don't see why Quicktime should put itself back in the start-up sequence to run in the background all the time.

I have done that! (in regards to the listed startup items which I do not have) There where no registry listings for the items I wanted to delete. Whats up with that?

Maybe you have logged on to your computer as a common user with limited rights. You should see whether you have Administrator's privileges in your account (go to Control Panel/Users' Accounts) and take a look at that.
If you can, try logging in as Administrator.
Sometimes changing some registry settings is not possible if you don't do that.Juan
