Quick Launch 'bar' locked

I am used to being able to extend or shorten the Quick Launch bar. In a PC running WinXP, I was unable to do that - the vertical bar that I expect to be able to drag rightwards to extend the Quick Launch bar was missing ! There was a different (immobile) boundary marker. It seems to me there must be an option to chose one or the other somewhere. Where would that be ? By the way, that inability to extend the Quick Launch bar was INdependent of whether the Task Bar was locked or not.

Right click taskbar and click properties.
Does the box next to "Show Quick Launch" have a tick in it?

right click on the taskbar and make sure there is not a checkmark next to "Lock the Taskbar"

right click on the start bar and click "Properties" make sure that there's no check mark over "Lock Taskbar" and if it is unmarked and click ok

As I said at the bottom of my post, this inability to exend the Quick Launch bar is independent of the tick for 'Lock Task Bar'.
There is a tick for Quick Launch bar, after all, it exists, but I can't extend it.
Whether there is a (vertical) bar near the Start button, I can't confirm till next week when I use the PC again - but I think I would have noticed it if there had been.
