Hey guy's, I wondered if anyone is running Zone Alarm on XP at all... Maybe I am paranoid but there is a program that tries to access the internet and act as a server called "generic host process". I assume that is normal but aside from that when I start my computer it starts listening on 3 abnormal ports through "generic host process". I am at work right now and don't quite remember them. I wonder if anyone know's exactly what generic host process is, if anyone else has this happening and I was also wondering if this is a critical security breech I should worry about. Thanks

Im running zone alarm to, and i get that generic host crap also. i block it from accessing the internet but then it wont let me connect afterwards, i guess thats what happens when u use the windows network adapters..it wont let me install then ones my modem came wit..

I ran zone alarm for a while as well and kept getting the same problem and frankly found it a major headache so i have disabled it temporarily until i find out what it is. so much hassle just to surf the web....

after some searching i found this link for a detailed explanation (unlike the one i found at microsoft's site) as to what services svchost.exe is tied to. it appears there are alot. some very important for networking (thus your immediate disco at not allowing it to connect), and some not important at all. check out this link. keep reading down the page...

XP is a descendant of Windows 2000 which I have, and I get the same thing from ZoneAlarm about the "SvcHost, Generic Host Process". I do NOT give it "server" privileges or "pass lock" privliges, and I haven't had hardly any problems connecting through my cable modem.

It has something to do with the windows reporting tool that sends error information back to microsoft. I forget where it is but there is an option to shut it off burried somewhere in the OS. I will have to get back to you on this when I am dumb enough to install windows XP.
