None of them are worth buying. They can't keep up with virus writers. Try one of free programs if you really think you need one. I don't have any AV software on my computers.

Yes, you need one!! I am using Avast (which is free), but there are many other free ones out there. Avast does not seem to slow down my computer and it automatically updates daily. Go to major geeks or any other download site.

I also use Avast. It's easier on the RAM compared to AVG or the others.

You only have 480MB RAM so that's part of your problem. Download & install AVG Free Edition. During the installation, click CUSTOM, then uncheck the box next to Link Scanner, then continue with the install. And while you're at it, download & install CCleaner & use it regularly.

marty525: Why do you say that an anti virus program is needed when I constantly see Hijack This logs with a virus and an anti virus program running side by side and the AV program doesn't even know that the virus is there?

I'm guessing you have 512MB but 32MB is being used by the onboard video, leaving 480MB for the system?

Hey guapo, how often does your system get infected? In fact, how would you even know? Judging from some of your other responses, you seem to think HJT is the best solution. If you need HJT, you're already infected.

NO AV program is infallible, but you should be running a multi-faceted approach...AV, firewall, anti-spy which all run in "real time", not to mention keeping away from nasty websites & using common sense when clicking on links or opening e-mail attachments. Even then, infections may occasionally slip by. But if you use your head, keep your programs up to date & scan regularly, infections should be extremely rare.

Thanks, jam, I could not have said it better myself. I have spent hours cleaning up relatives and friends computers who were foolish enough to go on to the net without an anti-virus and/or anti-spyware installed. I could imagine how much they would have had to pay someone to do it. I hope you continue to have good luck, guapo.

Well, you've heard some good ones mentioned, AVG, Avast, and Kapersky all have at one time had free versions, and seem to work reasonably well. AVG 7 used to be the favorite freebie, but the upgrade to 8 seemed to start hogging system resources (something you really can't afford with only 512MB of RAM). I'd recommend Avast over Kapersky since their free one now seems to be nothing more than a demo with a 30-day limit. And as mentioned, AV-software is just the start of keeping yourself safe these days. Whatever you decide, get something, and get it before you get infected (removing crap is much more difficult than blocking crap). You can be infected on broadband with just one wrong click...

Jam: I have run spybot numerous times and it said "Congratulations, no problem found. The same with anti malware from malwarebytes.

If one insists on having an AV program, use a free one because that's about all they are worth, zero.

I'm going to go against the grain and say that I agree with guapo. I keep avast on the family PC, but I've had so much good success on my PC that I don't use an AV at all. Guapo made a good point, IMO when he brought up why there are alot of posts about being infected, and when they post their HJT logs, they reveal an AV installed on their system. Since I don't look at porn or anything like that, I don't really have a problem. I use CCleaner 2 or 3 times a day.

I think though that Avast is the best AV.

Good for you. I don't use either of those two. But malware isn't the same as a virus. It makes no difference to me what you do with your system, I'm trying to help the OP.

"but the upgrade to 8 seemed to start hogging system resources"

The Link Scanner is what slows things down. That's why I recommended doing a custom install & unchecking the box so that Link Scanner doesn't get installed.

I was trying to help the OP too and I know that malware isn't the same as a virus. A virus gets into the registry. That's why I lock the registry with Mark Jacobs Registry Watcher.

It's free.

Among the free ones, Avast, Avira AntiVir and AVG are the best. Avira has some update issues. AVG 8 is not so good as compared to AVG 7. I have been using Avast now, and i am happy with it. Saved me many times.

Among the paid ones, i have heard Kaspersky is the best.

And whatever u may argue, but i think, u got to have an Antivirus software installed in ur system. Its foolish not to have one. Virus can come from network too... not necessarily some sites.

Also, Avast has picked up many Trojans on my computers that just slipped by AVG.
