Question about XP 3GB memory max

This is really for my own knowledge above anything else. I know Windows XP 32bit will not address more then 3GB of RAM. But what I want to know is if I would be better off running 3, 1GB sticks of DDR, or 4 sticks 1 GB of DDR.
DDR needs to be installed in pairs to take advantage of the extra clocking. Would running 3 sticks cause all the memory to disable the DDR feature? If that was so would you get better performance running 4 sticks of 1 GB RAM, with DDR active in both pairs, even though XP only addresses 3GB of it anyway.
It's kind of an obscure question but I would really like to know.

The maximum aamount of useful RAM in the 32 bit arena is 4GB, not 3GB. However your system MAY use up to 1GB, but usually less. If you have integrated graphics that can use 512GB of RAM then the 3GB may be close to right. Look at the link below to get more info on this topic. There is a link in #2 that will explain the issue.
