I have several old dos programs that I have always accessed from a menu program (menu.com). On older op sys the menu would direct to different folders using batch files. W/ xp I can go to the folder --but cannot stay there. After it executes the bat command the dos prompt always goes back to C: I really can't change a lot of the computer--since it is controlled by corp IT --I can do some things. Anyone have any ideas ??

Windows XP has no MS-DOS sub-system, what you see is CMD.exe - NT Command Prompt
When running DOS based software it runs in NTVDM which is New Technology Virtual DOS Machine, and a throwback to its grandaddy OS/2, it is an emulation environment.
Therefore setup up MS-DOS in DOS BOX or VirtualPC you will have more success but no gaurantees.

All,
thanx for the response. While looking at other problems, I learned that it is very important to correctly change directories with xp ( chdir C:\temp\temp ---or whateever) and also to use complete path in command lines. Doing that, I fooled around and got her going.
thanx ---if yur get this twice it's because I didn't think the first reply when thru --sorry.

Another thing you may want to try is XP Power Toys. There is a Power Toy based on a tip from "The Screen Savers" show when Leo was on it. It's called "CMD From Here". After running the power toy it installs a right click option called that says "Open a Command Prompt Here". Whichever folder you select, it opens the CMD window in that folder.
