Comment:

At the risk of getting hundreds of "get a DOS emulator" or "what do you want to run DOS games for" replies/flames, has anyone anywhere managed to run Quake (original game) on XP under any of the compatibility settings, or am I going to have to partition and install Win98?

Alternatively, would creating a boot disk help I wonder?

Looking forward to your accumulated wisdom!

Cheers,

Roger.

No flames - but yes, you'd probably need to try an emulator or go ahead with a multi boot system. Often there are sound issues running DOS games under WinXP - and you need sound for those 'shooters'

You can use a bootdisk, but if your HDD is not accessible to DOS (NTFS) then you would be pretty limited - iirc, Quake I is around 25 or 50Mb - unless you're able to run it from CD, but I suspect you'd need to have somewhere to keep the saved game files too.

Quake version 1.09 works on XP.

I found version 1.06 on the id Software site(link below) but I think that one won't be recent enough. Maybe Google will give you a link to update to v1.09 ?

jboy,

I think you're right, I'll probably need to dual boot as you have a good point about DOS and NTFS - clean slipped my mind!

svg,

I did a search and eventually found a link to download version 1.09 (0.97 for the PC) of GL-Quake. I tried running it to update the existing Quake install and I got some message about a missing DLL. I downloaded the DLL and then got various messages relating to OpenGL, VXD files etc. Trying various compatibility settings just changed the message I got. It got a bit late and I gave up eventually, so I guess I'll follow jboy's suggestion and dualboot.

Many thanks to you both for your time and help!

Roger.

Much like the original Classic DooM, it seems that the old Quake has been 'source ported' to run on modern systems, judging by this download page.

Since these are not commercial products, but reworked versions of the original code, may need a fair bit of tinkering to run.

Might try asking at the Quakeworld or DooMWorld forums, or possibly the gaming forum here.

.. or just go ahead with running some DOS. Never liked the original Quake as much as its successor, Quake II, but it certainly is a classic.

Thanks jboy, I'll have a play with those and see what happens!
