"I have some pictures that friends have sent me" - does that mean you these are images (i.e. JPG)? Then use a CD-RW (CD Burner) with a software that typically comes with the CD Burner such as Nero or Roxio to copy / burn the files onto the CD. If your PC doesn't have a CD Burner, then you have two choices - 1)get one (internal or external - USB) or 2)forget about it.

Well, quite right, first of all clear up, have yow CD-Burner. If you have, use the Ahead Nero, for example, to burn it. How to use (for Nero 6.0):
Run Nero StartSmart
Choose Make Data Disk
Now you have a window with your burning CD at the left and directories of yor computer at the right.
Choose all photoes you need to burn and just carry them over onto the left side.
Then push burn.
You also have to choose the speed of writing. Clear up the speed your CD support and choose any less or equal it.
In case you haven't CD-Burner and your photoes aren't very big in size, maybe your other friends have it. Then send them photoes on e-mail and they wright CD for you.
