If you right click on the file and click send to compressed zip folder, all you do then is delete the standard file and keep the zipped file. You can add a password to a zipped file by clicking on file menu and add a password, hope this helps.
ps if you extract the files in the zipped file you will have to delete the extracted file every time you finished with it and leave the zipped file in tact.
